2019 Brazil Trophy: Fratus Swims World’s Best; Scheffer Crushes SA Record

The final night of the 2019 Brazil Trophy ended with a bang as a national and South American record fell top kick off the session and another top time in the world was achieved.

Mallory Comerford, who won the 100 Free and was the high scorer was named female performer of the meet, while Marcelo Cheirighini was named male performer of the meet after earning high–scorer.

Pinheiros won the team event with 2,780, followed by Minas (2,565.50), Corinthians (998), Unisanta (879) and Felamengo (659.5).

RESULTS

Men’s 400 Free

Fernando Scheffer crushed his own Brazilian and South American record in the 400 free, finishing in 3:47.99 to win the event at the 2019 Brazil Trophy.

His previous record in the event was 3:49.06, giving him a dominating performance that could prove to be a big move heading into the rest of the year.

Luiz Altamir Melo finished second in 3:49.33 and Miguel Valente was third in 3:51.08.

Women’s 50 Free

The next event was the 50 free and Etiene Medeiros continued her strong meet by winning in 24.53.

Mallory Comerford, the NCAA champion in the 100 and 200 free, is swimming for Brazil’s Minas club this week and took the silver in 24.89.

Defending champion Lorrane Ferreira finished third in 25.30.

Men’s 50 Free

In the men’s 50 free, Bruno Fratus defended his national championship by winning in 21.47. He was the only swimmer to break 22 seconds in the event at the 2019 Brazil Trophy.

Fratus put himself at the top of the world leaderboard in the event for 2019.

Marcelo Chierighini finished second in 22.05.

Women’s 200 Back

Fernanda Goeij won the 200 back in 2:12.69, unseating the defending champion, Andrea Berrinho, who finished second in 2:13.03.

Ilaria Cusinato finished third in 2:13.60.

Men’s 200 Back

After one defending champion in the 200 back was unseated, the men’s 200 back champion succeeded in defending his title.

Leonardo de Deus won the event for the second consecutive year, this time in 1:58.12.

Brandonn Almeida finished second in 2:00.778 and Gabriel Fantoni was third in2:01.69.

Women’s 50 Breast

Jhennifer Alves Conceicao broke her own national and South American record during prelims but lowered it again by three more hundredths of a second to win in 30.47.

She came into the meet No. 4 in the world this year, and even with the record, remains there.

Macareno Ceballos was second in 31.01 and Julia Sebastian was third in 31.35.

Men’s 50 Breast

Joao Gomes Jr. was the fastest in the world this year in the prelims with a time of 26.42, but in the finals he dropped to third in 26.80.

Felipe Lima won in 26.50, followed by Felipe Silva (26.75) to close the 2019 Brazil Trophy.
