2018 French National Championships: Gastaldello, Metella Win on Day 2

The 2018 French National Championships continued Wednesday in Saint-Raphel, which is serving as the nation’s qualifying meet for the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow later this summer. In a unique qualifying criteria, swimmers will have to hit qualifying marks for the European Championships in the prelims of an event and then finish within the top-4 in finals in order to qualify for France’s European Games roster.

DAY TWO RESULTS

Day Two Events

Women’s 800 Free

Sharon Van Rouwendaal from the Netherlands won the 800 free in 8:39.19. Fanny LeSaffre took the second spot in 8:44.31, followed by Julie Berthier (8:46.49)

Men’s 200 Fly

Jordan Coelho surged to the title in the 200 butterfly. He finished in 1:58.52 to finish nearly a second ahead of Nans Roch (1:59.45). Matthias Marsau was third in 2:00.78.

Women’s 100 Breast

Fanny Deberghes won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.29 holding off Solene Gallego (1:09.57) and Camille Mallet (1:10.10).

Men’s 200 IM

Switzerland’s Jeremy Desplanches dominated the 200 IM, winning in 1:57.06. Frances’s Guillaume Laure took second in 2:02.51 and Geoffrey Renard (2:02.81).

Women’s 50 Back

Beryl Gastaldello cruised to victory in the 50 backstroke, winning in 27.97. Mathilde Cini took second in 28.29, followed by Camille Gheorghiu in 28.64.

Men’s 100 Free

The men’s 100 freestyle was one of the closest races of the day. Mehdy Metella earned the victory, finishing in 48.42. he held off Jeremy Stravius (48.90) and Maxime Grousset (49.57).
