Junya Koga Among Top Seeds at Day One Prelims of Singapore World Cup

The final stop of the 2017 FINA World Cup series has arrived in Singapore and several stars delivered top times in prelims of day one. Cate Campbell led a talented field of sprinters in the 100 free, while Katinka Hosszu collected two top seeds.

Young Americans Michael Andrew, Regan Smith, Dakota Luther, and Alex Walsh were among those grabbing top seeds.

Women’s 100m Breaststroke

Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson and Denamrk’s Rikke Pedersen battled for the top seed in prelims of the women’s 100 breast. Atkinson, who has twice tied the world record of 1:02.36, claimed the top seed with a 1:06.36. Pedersen followed close behind with a 1:06.45.

China’s Shi Jinglin grabbed the third place seed with a 1:06.59, followed by Japan’s Runa Imai and her time of 1:07.24.

Lin Pei Wun of Taipei took fifth in prelims with a 1:07.98, while China’s You Jingyao was sixth with a 1:09.01.

Australia’s Jessie Mary Quinn (1:09.77) and Singapore’s Christie Chue (1:09.86) rounded out the top eight qualifiers.

Men’s 100m Backstroke

Japan delivered a 1-2 punch in prelims of the men’s 100 back, with top stars Junya Koga and Ryosuke Irie delivering fast times. The duo led a quartet of 51’s in prelims with times of 51.20 and 51.44 respectively.

Hungary’s David Foldhazi picked up the third place seed with a 51.83, followed closely by Brazi’s Nelson Silva Junior and his time of 51.92.

Masaki Kaneko, also of Japan, posted a 52.11 to qualify fifth overall for finals, while Germany’s Christian Diener turned in a 52.18 for sixth.

The USA’s Carson Foster and Australia’s Bobby Hurley finished seventh and eighth with times of 52.25 and 52.35.

Women’s 100m Freestyle

Australian sprint star Cate Campbell led a talented field of athletes in prelims of the women’s 100 free. Campbell threw down the only sub-52 second swim, stopping the clock at a 51.98.

China’s Zhu Menghui grabbed second overall with a 52.58, followed by Denmark’s Pernille Blume with a 52.72.

Emma McKeon of Australia added a 52.88 to finish fourth in prelims, while the USA’s Lia Neal turned in a 52.91 for fifth.

Australia’s Bronte Campbell and Brittany Elmslie added times of 53.21 and 53.87, while Brazil’s Etiene Medeiros took eighth with a 54.24.

Men’s 400m Freestyle

Peter Bernek of Hungary led the men’s 400 free for most of the preliminary session, finishing first overall in prelims with a time of 3:43.31.

Aussie sprint star Cameron McEvoy showed strength in the mid-distance race with a second place qualifying time of 3:43.57, while Germany’s Poul Zellmann took third in prelims with a 3:43.72.

Americans Trey Freeman and Andrew Abruzzo picked up the fourth and fifth place seeds with times of 3:45.27 and 3:46.87 respectively.

Germany’s Jacob Heidtmann (3:46.98), Hungary’s David Verraszto (3:47.17), and Hungary’s Gergely Gyurta (3:47.64) qualified sixth through eighth.

Women’s 200m Butterfly

Emma McKeon of Australia flew to a top qualifying time of 2:06.62 in the women’s 200 fly, qualifying just ahead of Germany’s Franziska Hentke and her time of 2:07.03.

The Chinese duo of Zhang Chenyao and Zhang Yufei posted times of 2:07.41 and 2:07.58 for the third and fourth place seeds.

Dakota Luther of the USA grabbed fifth overall with a 2:07.95, while Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas took sixth with a 2:09.53.

Germany’s Alexandra Wenk and Australia’s Christine Licciardi were seventh and eighth in prelims with times of 2:09.60 and 2:11.01.

Men’s 100m Medley

Hong Kong’s Kenneth To bested the competition in prelims of the men’s 100 IM, including world record holder Vladimir Morozov. To stopped the clock at a time of 52.87 for the first place seed, while Morozov picked up the second place seed with a 52.95.

David Foldhazi of Hungary turned in a third place seed time of 53.45, touching a slim .01 seconds ahead of the Netherlands’ Kyle Stolk’s 53.46.

Belarus’ Pavel Sankovich posted a fifth place seed time of 53.71, followed by Israel’s Yakov Yan Touamrkin and his time of 53.90.

Daniel Dudas of Hungary and Yen-Hsin Huang of Taipei were seventh and eighth with times of 54.39 and 54.53.

Women’s 200m Backstroke

Katinka Hosszu of Hungary held off a quickly charging Regan Smith in prelims of the women’s 200 back. Hosszu claimed the top seed with a final time of 2:05.07, followed by the young Smith in a time of 2:05.66.

Japan’s Sayaka Akase turned in a third place seed time of 2:07.70, while Germany’s Lisa Graf took fourth in prelims with a 2:09.87.

Chen Jie of China posted a 2:11.92 for the fifth place seed and Australia’s Jessie Mary Quinn picked up sixth with a 2:13.81.

China’s Liu Yaxin and Singapore’s Li-Shan Chantel Liew were seventh and eighth in prelims with times of 2:15.85 and 2:18.14.

Men’s 200m Butterfly

Masaki Kaneko of Japan led a trio of 1:54’s in prelims of the men’s 200 fly, stopping the clock at a time of 1:54.34. Australia’s Nic Brown added a 1:54.53 for the second place seed, followed by India’s Sajan Prakash and his time of 1:54.77.

Belarus’ Yauhen Tsurkin took the fourth place seed with a time of 1:55.43, just ahead of the USA’s Carson Foster and his time of 1:55.78.

Germany’s Ramon Klenz (1:55.83), Hungary’s David Verraszto (1:56.38), and Canada’s Mackenzie Patrick Darragh (1:56.65) were sixth through eighth in prelims.

Women’s 800m Freestyle

Sarah Yip of Singapore posted the fastest time of the slower heats of the women’s 800 free, stopping the clock at a time of 9:10.11.

India’s Rayna Marie Saldanha finished second with a time of 9:11.37, followed by Paloma Cervera Canos’ 9:11.80.

Hui Ting Natalie Ho turned in a time of 9:30.28, while Celia Gaier was fifth in prelims with a 9:40.51.

Men’s 50m Breaststroke

Yasuhiro Koseki of Japan sprinted to the top seed in the men’s 50 breaststroke, posting a top qualifying time of 26.28.

Belarus’ Ilya Shymanovich and Russia’s Kirill Prigoda turned in close times of 26.42 and 26.44 for the second and third place seeds.

Raphael Rodrigues of Brazil took fourth in prelims with a 26.67, followed by the USA’s Michael Andrew’s 26.81.

The Netherlands’ Arno Kamminga (26.93), Russia’s Anton Chupkov (27.09), and Man You Chao (27.17) picked up sixth through eighth place.

Women’s 200m Medley

Just a few events after grabbing the top seed in the women’s 200 back, Katinka Hosszu added a top seed in the women’s 200 iM. Hosszu dominated the preliminary competition with a top showing of 2:04.98.

The USA’s Alex Walsh picked up the second place seed with a time of 2:08.00, followed by Australia’s Emily Seebohm and her time of 2:08.73.

Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden added a fourth place qualifying time of 2:09.47, just ahead of Korea’s Kim Seoyeong’s 2:09.72.

Japan’s Runs Imai (2:10.61) and Germany’s Lisa Hopink (2:12.29) and Alexandra Wenk (2:13.26) completed the top eight.

Men’s 50m Freestyle

Andrii Govorov of Ukraine dashed to first in the men’s 50 free, posting a top time of 21.41. Australia’s Cameron McEvoy added a close second place seed of 21.48.

Japan’s Shinri Shioura took third in prelims with a 21.54, followed by South Africa’s Chad le Clos and his time of 21.61.

Michael Andrew of the USA added a fifth place seed time of 21.64, while the Netherlands’ Jesse Puts was sixth with a 21.71.

France’s Clement Mignon finished seventh in prelims with a 21.78 and New Zealand’s Daniel Hunter grabbed eighth with a 21.84.
