Men’s 50 free

In one of the most stunning developments of Olympic qualifying this year is that Brazilian-swimming standard bearer Cesar Cielo will not be competing in his home Olympics after taking third in the men’s 50-meter free at the 2016 Maria Lenk Trophy.

Bruno Fratus entered today with a 21.50 from the Brazil Open in December as the fastest 50 freestyler in Brazil.  That time held up today as he won in 21.74 (the fifth-best in the world this year).  Italo Duarte, meanwhile, claimed the second Olympic roster spot with a time of 21.82 for sixth in the world.

Cielo, meanwhile, wound up third in 21.91, good for eighth in the world, but not good enough to make the squad.  Also, since he scratched the 100 free and a chance at the 400 free relay, Cielo put all his hope into the 50 free and lost out.

Marcelo Chierighini (22.17), Santo Condorelli (22.21), Andrii Govorov (22.21), Gabriel Santos (22.37) and Alan Vitoria (22.54) also swam in the finale.

Women’s 50 free

Etiene Medeiros and Graciele Herrmann finished the night with the two Olympic roster spots in the women’s 50-meter free.

Medeiros won tonight in 24.64, faster than her 24.71 from the Brazil Open in December that had been the fastest Olympic qualifying time for Brazil.

Loranne Ferreira, meanwhile, posted a 24.95 to finish second tonight, falling short of Herrmann’s 24.92 from the Brazil Open that delivered the second spot to Herrmann.

Herrmann took third tonight in 25.09 with Larissa Oliveira placing fourth in 25.18.

Priscila Souza (25.62), Luana Ribeiro (25.68), Alessandra Marchioro (25.93) and Daiene Dias (26.07) also competed in the championship heat.

Men’s 100 fly

A trio of swimmers came into the meet with FINA A cuts from the Brazil Open.

Henrique Martins (52.14), Marcos Macedo (52.17) and Nicholas Santos(52.31) all cleared the FINA A cut time of 52.36.

While Vinicius Lanza put himself in contention for a Rio spot with a 52.22 in prelims, he was unable to catch Martins or Macedo with a 52.75 to win the 100 fly tonight.

Thiago Pereira tied Santiago Grassi for second with 52.77s.

Kaio Almeida (52.80), Arthur Mendes (52.85), Guilherme Rosolen (52.97), Henrique Martins (53.00) and Macedo (53.06) wound up fourth through eighth.
