2016 African Swimming Championships: Day Four Finals Recap

Women’s 100 Fly:

Nathania van Niekerk of South Africa posted the fastest time of the evening in finals of the women’s 100 fly. Van Niekerk delivered a 1:02.61 to scrape 2.34 seconds off her prelims time of 1:04.95.

The Egyptian duo of Mariam Sakr and Rowaida Hesham completed the podium with close times of 1:03.11 and 1:03.23 respectively.

Algeria’s Sarah Hadj Abderrahmane turned in a 1:03.85 for fourth, followed by Angola’s Ana Nobrega and her time of 1:07.04.

Namibia’s Kiara Schatz (1:07.62), Mauritius’ Annah Auckburaullee (1:09.25), and Angola’s Raquel Tremoco (1:13.21) rounded out the top eight.

Men’s 400 Free:

South Africa’s Myles Brown topped the competition in finals of the men’s 400 free, posting a time of 3:54.80 for the gold.

Picking up second was Egypt’s Marwan Elamrawy with a time of 3:56.45, while Algeria’s Lounis Khendriche rounded out the podium with a 4:02.15.

Mozambique’s Igor Mogne posted a 4:04.55 to earn fourth, followed by Morocco’s Said Saber and his time of 4:10.27.

Namibia’s Phillip Seidler (4:11.11), Morocco’s Adil Assouab (4:17.84), and South Africa’s Edward Johannisen (4:29.59) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s 100 Breast:

Kaylene Corbett of South Africa posted the fastest time in finals of the women’s 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock at a 1:11.81, scraping 1.05 seconds off her prelims time of 1:12.86.

Fellow South African Hanim Abrahams took second with a final time of 1:12.35, just ahead of Egypt’s Mai Atef and her time of 1:12.49.

Rania Hamida Nefsi of Algeria took fourth overall with a 1:15.00, while Namibia’s Antonia Roth finished fifth with a 1:19.64.

Angola’s Maria Cipcic (1:23.82) and Mozambique’s Gisela Cossa (1:26.89) and Sumeia Remane Damao (1:35.94) completed the heat.

Men’s 200 Breast:

South Africa delivered a 1-2 punch in finals of the men’s 200 breaststroke. Ayrton Sweeney led the charge with a winning time of 2:16.96, while teammate Alaric Basson picked up second with a 2:20.82.

Egypt’s Hassan Yasser turned in a time of 2:21.17 for third.

Ramzi Chouchar of Algeria posted a 2:28.66 for fourth, followed by Morocco’s Ahmed Reda Ennui’s 2:29.18.

Mauritius’ Oliver Ah Ching and Botswana’s Ayaan Chand finished sixth and seventh respectively with times of 2:39.73 and 2:57.43.

Women’s 800 Free:

The women’s 800 free featured a shorter heat of just four swimmers led by Algeria’s Souad Nefissa Cherouati. Cherouati turned in a winning time of 9:10.29 for the gold, while Egypt’s Reem Kassem took second with a 9:13.85.

South Africa’s Michelle Weber posted a final time of 9:15.89 to claim bronze, followed by Mauritius’ Layne Lim Ah Tock and her time of 10:10.84.
