On the fourth and final night of the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Santa Clara, Lilly King threw down a series of three monster 50 breaststroke races, each faster than the last. She discusses how she descended the races, purposefully building the second one and putting her all into the last to touch in just 0.22 seconds off her world record.

When asked about whether her competitiveness distracts her, she replied that on the contrary, it motivates her. She mentioned that checking results of meets across the world and being “in the know” helps her set goal times and ensures that she doesn’t get “blindsided.”

When asked about her back-and-forth with Russian rival Yulia Efimova, King laughed and said this year is a much-needed break from the stress of seeing Efimova in person, but she still enjoys the ongoing “virtual battle.”
