Thomas Heilman Roars to YMCA Gold in 400 IM; Anna Moesch Continues Speed Show

It was another strong day for 15-year-old age-group standout Thomas Heilman (Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont) at the YMCA National Championships in Greensboro.

One day after winning the 100-yard butterfly, Heilman extended himself to the 400 individual medley and emerged with a decisive triumph. Heilman notched a time of 3:49.31 to defeat Kalen Anbar (New Canaan) by more than four seconds. Anbar put up a time of 3:53.75. Heilman immediately shot to the front of the field, on the strength of a 50.90 butterfly leg which handed him a two-second advantage. Heilman extended his lead on the backstroke leg, but Anbar pulled within a second after the breaststroke. But Heilman’s split of 52.46 on freestyle enabled him to rebuild his wide margin.

Having already produced several impressive sprint-freestyle times in relay action, Greater Somerset’s Anna Moesch won the 200 freestyle in dominant style. Leading a gold-bronze showing with teammate Catherine Meisner (1:46.55), Moesch won the race in 1:44.10. Moesch was out in 50.38 to build a lead of more than a second. Spartanburg’s Kirsti McEnroe was the silver medalist in 1:46.33. Moesch led off Greater Somerset’s winning 200 freestyle relay in 22.22 on Tuesday and closed its victorious 400 medley relay on the same night with a 47.02 split.

Greater Somerset’s Emily Thompson, coming off three medals on Day Two, claimed a commanding win in the 400 individual medley. After cruising to the top seed during prelims, Thompson clocked 4:10.08 in the final to beat Spartanburg’s Hayden Penny (4:12.70).

It was a gold-silver finish for Pennsylvania athletes in the women’s 100 backstroke as Leah Shackley (Blair) topped Anya Mostek (Phoenixville). Shackley touched the wall in 52.74, with Mostek finishing a half-second back in 53.29. On the men’s side, Tommy Janton (Western Branch) and Daniel Diehl (Cumberland) were the only swimmers to break 47 or 48 seconds, with Janton emerging on top, 46.75 to 46.84.

Diehl came back later in the session to pick up the title in the 200 freestyle. The 16-year-old went 1:35.37 to finish more than a second ahead of Lynchburg’s Brendan Whitfield (1:36.78).

The Piedmont foursome of Izzy Bradley, Elisabeth Bendall, Grey Davis and Morgan Thomas won the women’s 200 medley relay in 1:40.62.
