Regan Smith continued her successful weekend at the 2018 Speedo Junior National Championships West with a dominating showing in the final of the women’s 200 fly.

Smith, representing Riptide Swim Team, flew to an immediate lead over the competition and continued to build her lead as she propelled herself closer and closer to the finish and Mary T. Meagher’s elusive 1981 National Age Group (NAG) record.

There was little doubt in the final 50 yards that Smith was going to achieve her feat; she had turned at the 150 yard mark with a time of 1:21.38, leaving her 31.60 seconds to make it to the wall and claim her next NAG record. It only took her 29.53 seconds. Smith stopped the clock at a 1:51.24 to claim gold, the NAG record, and a new meet record.

Smith had flirted with the NAG record once before, posting a 1:53.50 in March of 2018 at the 2018 LE Speedo Sectionals.

It wasn’t that good since the record only stood for 37 years.
