Princeton Hires Lara Mitchell as Assistant Coach

Princeton University on Monday hired Lara Mitchell as an assistant coach to its women’s swimming and diving program.

Mitchell joins the staff of head coach Abby Brethauer after two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Ithaca College from 2024-26.

“I am thrilled to join the PUCSDT coaching staff alongside Abby and Joe and can’t wait to learn from them in the coming season,” Mitchell said in a university press release. “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity to coach such a talented group of swimmers here at Princeton.”

Mitchell helped guide Ithaca’s women’s team to championships in the Liberty League both seasons as well as a men’s title in 2026. She has also worked with the Syracuse Chargers club team as an age-group coach and as a mental performance consultant with non-swimmers at Ithaca.

Mitchell swam at Boston University from 2020-24. She set eight program records (three individual, five relays) and was a two-time Team MVP for the Terriers. The backstroker earned 10 medals at the Patriot League Championships. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from BU in 2024 and a master’s in sports and exercise science with a concentration in mental performance from Ithaca in May 2026.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lara to the Princeton Swimming & Diving family,” Brethauer said. “From the moment we met, she brought an incredible level of energy, enthusiasm, and passion for coaching. Her background as both a competitive swimmer at Boston University and her work on deck at Ithaca College has prepared her to step into this role and make an immediate impact on the continued development of our student-athletes and our program. We are so excited to have her get started!”
