Mona McSharry Goes 2:22 For Irish 200m Breaststroke Record
Mona McSharry bypassed 2:23 altogether as she went 2:22.49 for an Irish 200m breaststroke record at the Mel Zajac Jr International Swim Meet.
The 23-year-old, who won the breaststroke treble at the inaugural European U23 Championships in Dublin last year, had a previous best and national record of 2:24.50 from the Glasgow International Swim Meet in May 2023.
On Saturday she sliced 2.01secs from that time in the prelims while representing the University of Tennessee at the meet in Vancouver, Canada.
That time elevated McSharry to top-five performer in the world this year with the 12th-fastest performance although with the likes of Tes Schouten competing at the Sette Colli, the rankings may well change again this very day.
McSharry went on to win the final in 2:22.68 with her prelim time.
It was the second Irish record of the day with Shane Ryan lowering the 50 free standard to 21.82 at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade, well within the Olympic A cut but with the Swim Ireland having already slammed shut.
