Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell Dominates 100 Back at 2017 Speedo Sectionals Minneapolis

The second night of the 2017 Speedo Sectionals Minneapolis continued with fast swims all around. Among the highlights was a meet record from Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell in the 100 back and a commanding win from Wisconsin’s Anthony Lyons in the 200 freestyle.

Nasa Wildcat and soon-to-be Texas Longhorn Ella Tierney won the women’s 200 freestyle in 2:01.86 to kick off the second night of competition in Minneapolis. Tierney was followed by University of Missouri’s Courtney Evensen in 2:02.83. Madison Tew of Wisconsin was third in 2:04.00.

Wisconsin’s Anthony Lyons led the men’s 200 freestyle by over a second, finishing first in 1:50.98. His teammate, Griffin Back, took second place in 1:52.62. Third place went to Bennett McDade of Badger Aquatics.

The women’s 400 IM was one of the closer races of the night. Missouri State’s Josie Pearson got her hand on the wall first in a time of 4:53.85. The battle for second place came down to two 15 year olds, Green Bay’s Emma Lasecki and Nasa Wildcat’s Annika Wagner. Lasecki’s 4:54.84 just out touched Wagner’s 4:54.85 for second and third place, respectively.

Dropping nearly ten seconds from prelims, Wisconsin’s Joseph Milinovich won the men’s 400 IM in 4:25.58. Missouri State’s Phillip Willett followed in second in 4:29.01. Wade Nelson took third in 4:32.21.

Minnesota’s Tevyn Waddell dominated the women’s 100 backstroke, winning of a time of 1:00.96. Waddell dropped over a second from her seed time and broke the previous meet record (1:02.28) both in prelims and finals. Wisconsin’s Jessica Unicomb was second behind Waddell in 1:01.56. Unicomb was also under the previous meet record in both prelims and finals. Elmbrook’s Ashlyn Schoof was third in 1:03.15.

Neil Wachtler of the Kansas City Blazers won the men’s 100 backstroke in 56.44, just ahead of Badger Aquatics’s Justin Temprano. Temprano finished in 56.58. Mitchell Whyte of the Hudson Area Swimming Association picked up third in 58.31.

The women’s 400 freestyle relay went to the University of Minnesota in 3:48.21. Second place went to Wisconsin Aquatics in 3:49.40. Ozaukee Aquatics placed third in 3:52.31.

The men’s 400 freestyle relay was a close race between the Hawkeye Swim Club and Wyoming Aquatics. The Hawkeyes got the win, touching first in 3:26.19. Wyoming came in second in 3:26.43. Wisconsin Aquatics finished third in 3:27.82.
