Joanna Evans Among Night Two Winners at Austin Speedo Sectionals

The second night of competition at the 2017 Austin Speedo Sectionals saw a variety of athletes grabbing victories. Among them was Joanna Evans, Esther Gonzalez Medina, and Samuel Stewart.

Women’s 200 Breast

Esther Gonzalez Medina of Aggie Swim Club delivered a top showing of 2:32.91 in finals of the women’s 200 breast.

The Lakeside Aquatic duo of Emma Garfield and Lauren Savoy picked up second and third place finishes of 2:35.55 and 2:37.64.

Men’s 200 Breast

Aggie Swim Club continued to top the breaststroke events with a 1-2 punch in the men’s 200. Benjamin Walker grabbed the gold with a time of 2:16.65, while teammate Mauro Castillo Luna was second with a 2:17.36.

Casey Melzer of Longhorn Aquatics finished third overall with a time of 2:21.45.

Women’s 200 Free

Joanna Evans, swimming unattached, posted the only sub-two minute swim of the women’s 200 free. Evans posted a final time of 1:59.91 to snag gold.

Longhorn Aquatics’ Quinn Carrozza turned in a final time of 2:00.99, just ahead of Aggie Swim Club’s Kathryn Portz’s 2:01.03.

Men’s 200 Free

Jeffrey Newkirk, swimming unattached, won the men’s 200 free with a top showing of 1:49.92, finishing more than two seconds ahead of the competition.

Matthew Willenbring of Austin Swim Club picked up the silver medal with a time of 1:52.18, while Joshua Artmann, swimming unattached, finished third with a time of 1:52.70.

Women’s 400 IM

Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo, representing Aggie Swim Club, was the top finisher in the women’s 400 IM, topping the competition by more than six seconds with a time of 4:49.25.

Texas Ford Aquatics’ Camryn Toney touched second overall with a final time of 4:55.72, followed by Rice Aquatics’ Kaitlyn Swinney and her time of 4:57.11.

Men’s 400 IM

Longhorn Aquatics’ Samuel Stewart outlasted the competition in finals of the men’s 400 IM, delivering a final time of 4:25.11 for gold.

Grant Thompson of Austin Swim Club claimed the silver medal with a time of 4:30.91, while Cypress Fairbank’s Cameron Dafoe earned the bronze with a time of 4:31.30.
