Gregorio Paltrinieri Wins First Open Water Gold at University Games

Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri has won the 1500 free gold medal at every major meet. He has won at the Olympics, World Championships, the Europeans and the World University Games. Paltrinieri announced recently he was looking to start competing in open water and he won his first gold in the 10K on Sunday morning in Taipei at the University Games.

Paltrinieri won with a 1:54:52.4 ahead of Germany’s Soeren Meissner (1:55:01.5) and Poland’s Krzysztof Pielowski (1:55:19.6). The race has seen some controversy in the past few days as both the United States and Canada dropped out of the race citing safety concerns.

Only 18 total men competed in the race as Australia and Great Britain also withdrew their swimmers from the race. Andrea Manzi of Italy and Ali Artimon of Romania did not finish the race.

In the women’s race, only 15 ended up competing as Hungarian Anna Olasz won the gold medal with a 2:04:12.2 ahead of Italian Giulia Gabrielleschi (2:04:17.9) and France’s Adeline Furst (2:04:23.1).

Only Samantha Winward of New Zealand and Justyna Burska of Poland did not finish the women’s race as Australia, Great Britain, South Africa and the Czech Republic withdrew its swimmers in the race.
