Govorov Blasts Another Fast 50 Fly On Final Day Of Prelims At 2018 Sette Colli Trophy

The 2018 Sette Colli Trophy continued in Rome, Italy this morning after an incredibly fast first day of competition that saw plenty of meet and even some national records go down. The second day of the meet features the men’s and women’s 200 back, 200 breast, 200 free, 200 IM, as well as the men’s 50 fly, and women’s 200 fly.

Italian swimmer Margherita Panziera led all qualifiers through the women’s 200 back (2:09.68), while countrymate Christopher Ciccarese did the same in men’s event (2:00.70). Hungarian Boglarka Kapas finished just ahead of teammate Lilianna Szilagyi in their heat to lead all qualifiers with a 2:09.62.

Andriy Govorov, who most recently rattled the world record in the 50 butterfly during the Mare Nostrum tour, looks like he is setting himself up to do the same again here, leading all qualifiers in the men’s 50 fly with a 22.89. That put him almost a full second ahead of the next closest qualifiers, Jesse Puts (23.68) and Ben Proud (23.69).

Dutch swimmer Arno Kamminga continued his strong meet in Rome, earning the top seed in the men’s 200 breast with a 2:10.04. Kamminga did break the national record in the 100 breast earlier in the meet, so we will have to see how close he can get to his national record of 2:08.70 tonight. He should get a race from Brit James Wilby (2:12.22) and German Marco Koch (2:12.26).

British swimmer Molly Renshaw will have the middle lane in the women’s 200 breast tonight after her 2:27.43. Notably, Russian Yulia Efimova was only seventh here in 2:29.40, but a look at her splits (36.01/38.80/36.87/37.72) shows she has a ton of room to drop tonight. Efimova was 1:04.98 in the 100 on the first night of the meet, which is the fastest time in the world this year.

Efimova also qualified second in the 200 IM (2:13.13) shortly after the 200 breast behind Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor (2:12.94). Hungarian David Verraszto took the top seed in the men’s 200 IM (2:01.15).

Other top seeds include Great Britain’s Stephen Milne in the men’s 200 free (1:48.45), Dutch swimmer Femke Heemskerk in the women’s 200 free (1:58.31).
