Gianluca Urlando, representing DART Swimming, continued to re-write the National Age Group (NAG) record book on the final night of the 2018 Speedo Junior National Championships West. Earlier in the meet, Urlando had claimed new records in the 15-16 age group for the 100 fly and the 100 back. Tonight, he added the short course yards edition of the 200 fly to his name.

Urlando flew to an immediate lead in the race and was clearly on a mission. He had already downed NAG records that were previously held by Destin Lasco and Michael Andrew, but the 200 fly record was held by an even bigger target: Michael Phelps.

The 16-year-old kept a swift pace throughout the entirety of the race, edging closer and closer to taking down one of the GOAT’s remaining three NAG records. Urlando stopped the clock at a time of 1:40.91, finishing 1.19 seconds faster than Phelps’ 2002 NAG record of 1:42.10.

Urlando has neared this record before, posting a 1:42.49 on November 3, 2018 in Redding, California.

The 200 fly brings Urlando’s NAG record count up to three for short course yards, while Phelps now only holds the 15-16 400 IM (3:42.08) and the 17-18 500 free (4:12.33)
