FGCU Women, UMBC Men Claim Coastal Collegiate Championship Titles

Both FGCU women and UMBC men defended their Coastal Collegiate title yesterday evening. Day 4 of the championship meet contained two new individual meet records in the men’s 100 freestyle and the women’s 200 breaststroke.

Day 4 finals, the last session of the 2015-2016 Coastal Collegiate championship meet started off with the 1650. First place from Gardner-Webb went to Lauren Oglesby with a time of 16:41.17. Second place went to FGCU’s senior, Lani Cabrera (16:43.03). Third place was won by Liberty senior, Kristin VanDeventern (16:49.89).

The 200 backstroke followed the mile. The race was won by freshman, Elise Haan, from FGCU with a time of 1:54.76. Only a few tenths off from the meet record. Second place from Liberty, Victoria Tschoke, swam a 1:58.11 Third place went to Mykala Arnold went a 1:58.52.

Freshman from FGCU, Fanny Teijonsalo won the 100 freestyle (48.72). Teammate and second place winner, Katie Latham, went a 49.37. Third place from Liberty, Kendall Hough, swam a 49.45.

Following freestyle was the 200 breaststroke. In first place with a  time of 2:11.51 was Katie Armitage from FGCU. Her time tied the conference meet record. Second place went to Morgan Rulevich (UNC Asheville) with a 2:15.45. Third place, Prudence Rooker, from Liberty, swam a 2:16.79.

Freshman from FGCU, Christina Elmgree, swam a 1:57.63 in her 200 butterfly. Alicia Finnigan of Liberty, went a 1:59.53. Third place went to Yee Ching Wong (FGCU), 2:01.97.

The 400 yard freestyle relay was won by FGCU with a time of 3:18.49. The relay included Elise Haan, Barbara Caraballo, Katie Latham, and Fanny Teijonsalo. Liberty University placed second (3:21.33). Third place finish went to Georgia Southern (3:24.67)

Florida Gulf Coast women won 16 out of the total 20 events in the Coastal Collegiate Championship Meet. The women have also won 7 championships in the past 8 years.

The men’s 1650 was won by Kyrylo Shvets (Incarnate Word), he swam a 15:37.87. Following close behind was UMBC’s Felix Richtsfeld with a 15:38.13. Third place went to Connor Hennessy from Incarnate Word (15:41.35).

The 200 backstroke was won by UMBC’s Ahmed Wahby with a time of 1:46.81. Wahby outouched Aaron Moran (Incarnate Word), who got second with a time of 1:46.84. Third place finisher, Anton Mikaelsson (Old Dominion), swam a 1:47.45.

Nathan Lile (Gardner-Webb) broke the meet record in the 100 freestyle. Setting a new record with a time of 43.26. Second place finisher, Gregor Spoerlein (UMBC) swam a 43.90. Third place went to Matthiew Burtez (FAU) with a 44.16.

The 200 breaststroke was won by Leo Endres of UMBC with a time of 1:58.99. Following in second place, by only .01, was David Moore (Incarnate Word), swimming a 1:59.00. Kyle Paxton of UMBC placed third (2:00.02).

The 200 fly was the last individual race of the meet, in first place was Reed Mathews. Mathews (Old Dominion) swam a 1:43.04. Behind Mathews, Beau Fusilier of Incarnate Word finished with a 1:47.39. Third place went to teammate Kaulen Applin (1:49.70).

The men’s 400 freestyle relay was won by Gardner-Webb. The 2:58.41 was swam by Nathan Lile, Connor Bos, Tyler Gomez, and Cameron Pou. Second place was Old Dominion (2:59.09). Third place finisher, Florida Atlantic, swam a 2:59.13.
