Bryce Mefford Claims Two Wins at Day Two of Speedo Sectionals in Carlsbad

The 2017 Speedo Sectionals in Carlsbad with day two seeing several people pick up multiple medals. Bryce Mefford was among the top athletes of the session, winning two golds.

SCAL’s Elise Garcia dueled with DART’s Amalie Fackenthal for the win in the women’s 100 fly. Garcia touched just ahead of Fackenthal with a 52.70, while Fackenthal settled for second and a 52.78. BREA’s Alexis Margett snagged third with a final time of 53.66.

Bryce Mefford of SMST scorched the competition in the men’s 100 fly, touching in a final time of 46.80 to scrape 1.72 seconds off his prelims time of 48.52. OAPB’s Jolen Griffin touched second overall with a 48.65, while PS’s Brendan Santana took third with a 48.70.

Mefford later added a gold medal in the 100 back to his collection, finishing with a time of 47.38. DART’s Gianluca Urlando grabbed second with a 48.92, followed by Griffin’s 49.39.

Taylor Ault of RMDA swam away from the competition in finals of the women’s 500 free, turning in a final time of 4:40.95. The 18-year-old scratched 4.86 seconds off her prelims time of 4:45.81. BREA’s Mikki Thompson posted a second place finish of 4:$6.32, just ahead of FAST’s Courtney Tseng and her time of 4:49.71.

Thompson quickly rebounded from her second place finish to claim victory in the 200 IM just a few events later. Thompson touched in a final time of 2:00.31, while Garcia added a silver to her medal collection with a 2:02.28. STAS’ Kristina Murphy touched third with a 2:02.45.

RMDA’s Brad Gonzales claimed his second individual win of the meet with a top showing in the men’s 500 free. Gonzales posted a 4:22.42 to add to the 500 win to his distance collection. FAST’s Simon Lamar picked up second with a 4:25.99, followed by RMDA’s David Wang’s 4:29.11.

The women’s 100 back proved to be one of the closest races of the night as Alexandra Crisera of CITI and Chloe Clark of SMST finished a shy .01 seconds apart. Crisera got her hand to the wall first, posting a 54.42 over Clark’s 54.43. Clark’s teammate Jennifer Lathrop posted a third place finish of 54.50.

Bradley Prolo, swimming unattached, delivered the top time in the men’s 200 IM, stopping the clock at a final 1:50.19. CCAT’s Hayden Liu finished second with a 1:51.22, while SCAT’s Weston Rowan touched third with a 1:51.66.

Brea Aquatics took home the win in the women’s 400 medley relay. Emily Trieu (56.51), Kelsey Lloyd (1:03.13), Alexis Margett (55.59), and Thompson (50.79) posted a combined time of 3:46.02 for the gold. North Coast Aquatics finished second with a time of 3:47.98, just ahead of Davis Aquadarts Racing Team’s 3:48.44.

The relay team of Colby Mefford (51.65), Ben Dillard (57.34), B. Mefford (47.18), and Finn O’Haimhirgin (47.13) from Sierra Marlins Swim Team claimed victory in the men’s 400 medley relay with a 3:23.30. Brea Aquatics posted a second place finish of 3:25.24, while Davis Aquadarts Racing Team grabbed third with a 3:26.66.
