Brazil Names 29 Swimmers to 2016 Olympic Team

At the conclusion of the Maria Lenk Trophy, the Brazilian Aquatics Sports Confederation named 29 swimmers to the country’s 2016 Olympic swim team. These 20 men and nine women have a unique opportunity to compete on their home soil, beginning in August.

On the men’s side, the team includes, Bruno Fratus and Ítalo Duarte who hold the world’s fifth and sixth best 50 freestyles in the world this year.

Thiago Pereira and Henrique Rodrigues, who impressively tied in the 200 IM, will also compete again in Rio, as will Leonardo de Deus, with the world’s fifth best 200 butterfly.

Brandonn Almeida, Tales Cerdeira, Marcelo Chierighini, Kaio Márcio de Almeida, João de Lucca, João Gomes Junior, Guilherme Guido, Marcos Macedo, Henrique Martins, Luiz Altamir Melo, Nicolas Oliveira, Matheus Santana, Felipe França Silva, Thiago Simon and Miguel Valente round out the roster on the men’s side.

Cesar Cielo is a notable absence from the Brazilian team, after the Olympic gold medalist scratched the 100 free and finished third in the 50 free.

Representing the women will be Larissa Oliveira and Etiene Medeiros, current and former Brazilian record holders in the 100 freestyle.

They will be joined by Jessica Cavalheiro, Daynara de Paula, Daiene Dias, Graciele Herrmann, Manuella Lyrio, Joanna Maranhão, and Gabrielle Roncatto.
