Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 3 Finals: Katherine Zenick Sparks Ohio State With Butterfly Win; Team Race Tightens

The 2024 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Friday from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., with the Day 3 finals.
The Day 3 events are the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving and 200 free relay.

Big Ten Women’s 100 Butterfly
In an event dominated by Michigan and Ohio State swimmers, the Buckeyes got the win, but the Wolverines made a move.
Ohio State senior Katherine Zenick won the event in 51.47, an NCAA B cut. She has been a huge part of the Buckeyes for years and started a pivotal night for them with a bang.
The next three spots went to the Wolverines as sophomore Brady Kendall was second (51.79), junior Natalie Kan was third (51.88) and freshman Anna Boemer was fourth (51.99).
Ohio State took three of the last four spots as well with senior Tristan Harrison finishing fifth (52.03), grad student Morgan Kraus finishing sixth (52.25) and senior Catherine Russo taking eighth (53.40).
Ohio State scored 103 points in the finals, while the Wolverines scored 81.
Minnesota freshman Claire Reinke finished seventh (53.22).

Big Ten Women’s 400 IM
Minnesota senior Megan Van Berkom started quick in the 400 IM and held on to earn the victory. She finished in 4:06.71 – an NCAA B cut – after an opening split of 26.16, then 29.78 to earn the quick lead.
Van Berkom then held off the field by nearly two seconds as Wisconsin senior Callahan Dunn was second in 4:08.90.
Ohio State went 3-5-7-8 behind Krista Marlin (4:09.46), Mia Rankin (4:10.48), Kyra Sommerstad (4:11.24) and Jessica Eden (4:15.21).
Michigan’s Kathryn Ackerman finished fourth in 4:09.54 and Indiana’s Anna Freed took sixth in 4:10.87.

Big Ten Women’s 200 Freestyle
Indiana junior Anna Peplowski dropped more than a second from her prelims time to win the 200 free in an NCAA A cut time of 1:42.62.
She was the lone swimmer in the field to reach an A cut.
Wisconsin junior Abby Carlson finished second in 1:43.49, ahead of Michigan’s Stephanie Balduccini (1:43.75) and Katelyn Crom (1:43.93).
Northwestern grad student Ayla Spitz finished fifth in 1:44.54.
Ohio State grad student Amy Fulmer finished sixth (1:44.77), followed by Indiana’s Kritin Paegle (1:46.74) and Ella Ristic (1:46.88).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Breaststroke
Ohio State kept the 1-2 finish from prelims in the 100 breaststroke, though the swimmers were reversed.
Grad students Hannah Bach and Josephine Panitz went 1-2 for the Buckeyes, supplying a combined 60 points to their team.
Bach finished with an A cut time of 57.54, while Panitz had a B cut time of 58.49.
Indiana junior Brearna Crawford was the only other swimmer in the field to break a minute and she took third in 59.73.
Wisconsin sophomore Hazal Ozkan took fourth in 1:00.11, followed by Nebraska’s Maia Hall (1:00.16), Rutgers’ Tina Celik (1:00.41), Ohio State’s Reese Dehen (1:00.52) and Michigan senior Claire Donan (1:00.63).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Backstroke
Indiana junior Kacey McKenna broke the pool record to win the 100 backstroke. Dropping a second from prelims, she finished in 50.49, an NCAA A cut.
The time broke the pool record set in 2010 by Florida’s Gemma Spofforth (50.84).
Wisconsin senior Phoebe Bacon took second in 51.14, followed by Ohio State’s Nyah Funderburke (51.68), Michigan’s Casey Chung (52.08), and Ohio State’s Tristan Harrison (52.69).
Minnesota senior River Rodriguez took sixth (52.74), Indiana sophomore Mya Dewitt was seventh (52.79) and Ohio State grad student Morgan Kraus was eighth (52.87), swimmer her second final of the evening.

Indiana went 1-2 in 3-meter diving as junior Skyler Liu won with 379.95 points and senior Anne Fowler was second with 347.05.
Minnesota’s Vivi Del Angel took third with 344.60.

Big Ten Women’s 200 Free Relay
Indiana closed the session with a Big Ten meet record in the 200 free relay. Anna Peplowski, Ashley Turak, Chiok Sze Yeo and Kristina Paegle won the event in 1:26.66, an NCAA A cut.
The previous mark was 1:26.70 by Ohio State last year.
Michigan’s Stephanie Balduccini, Brady Kendall, Claire Newman and Lindsay Flynn also brook the pool record and were just off the meet record with a 1:26.75.
Wisconsin’s Hailey Tierney, Phoebe Bacon, Abigail Wanezek and Abby Carlson finished third in 1:28.16.
