AUSTRALIAN TRIALS, Day 4, Heats: Kyle Chalmers In 48.39 Leads Next Gen Contenders Into 100m Freestyle Final

Australian sprint king, Kyle Chalmers leads a field of Paris contenders into tonight’s 100m freestyle final in Brisbane, a next gen group he hopes to spearhead into the Olympic arena in six weeks time – with just half a second separating the field – chasing a QT of 48.06.

The 25-year-old Rio Olympic champion and Tokyo silver medallist from is only one of two Olympians in the top eight – with Tokyo relay specialist, former Western Australian, Zac Incerti – now on the Queensland Sunshine Coast with Chalmers.

Chalmers (St Andrews, QLD) won the opening heat in 48.39 from Sydney’s in form Will Yang (SOSC, NSW) 48.50 with Incerti (USC Spartans, QLD), qualifying fifth fastest in 48.78, finishing second in heat two behind Flynn Southam (Bond, QLD) 48.64.

With Jamie Jack (St Peters Western, QLD), the 21-year-old sister of female sprint ace Shayna Jack, winning heat three in 48.69.

Jack is one of three St Peters Western swimmers in the field with Kai Taylor 48.81 (fourth in the 200m final and in contention for the relay) joined by another World Championship relay gold medallist Jack Cartwright, 48.73.

Former Tasmanian, Max Giuliani (Miami, QLD) 48.90, the 200m winner and Paris qualifier, rounding out the top eight.

The hard luck story was Cody Simpson (Griffith University, QLD) in 49.04, a touch outside his best, who finished ninth – missing the final by one place and 0.14 – but a solid hit out as he prepares for his pet event, the 100m butterfly on Saturday.
