2017 NJCAA Championships: Indian River Secures 2017 NJCAA Championship Title

The men and women of Indian River completed their charge to the 2017 NJCAA Championship title with scores of 1293 and 1210 respectively. The Pioneers have won the NJCAA Championship each year since 1975 (men) and 1976 (women).

Finishing second on the women’s side was South Georgia State College with a score of 563, while Iowa Central took third with 498.5 points.

On the men’s side, Southwestern Oregon grabbed the silver with a time of 557, followed by Iowa Central’s third place finish of 486 points.

Women’s 50 Fly

Osianna McReed of Indian River turned in a top time of 24.62 to maintain her spot atop the leaderboard in the women’s 50 fly. McReed’s time edges past the 2016 record of 24.77 set by Taylor Lovemore.

Teammate Meagan Abad grabbed second with a time of 25.90, followed by Southwestern Oregon’s Sienna Smith and her time of 26.53.

Men’s 50 Fly

Nicholas Loomis of Indian River grabbed first in the men’s 50 fly with a time of 21.46, stopping just shy of his 2016 record of 21.44.

Teammate Gavin Erdmann posted a 23.20 for second, followed closely by Southwestern Oregon’s Thomas Crawford and his time of 23.33.

Women’s 1650 Free

Ianthe van der Westhuizen of Indian River swam well ahead of the competition in finals of the women’s 1650 free, posting a final time of 17:21.29 to improve upon her seed time of 17:27.71.

Teammate Madisyn Lyons picked up second overall with a time of 17:58.15, while Monroe Community College’s Megan Mack took third overall with an 18:33.33.

Men’s 1650 Free

Alexander Berggren of Indian River swam beneath the 16-minute mark with a top showing of 15:59.73 in the men’s 1650 free.

Fellow Pioneer Jacob Andrasco took second overall with a time of 16:30.92, while Southwestern Oregon’s Cas Sheridan was third overall with a 17:01.92.

Women’s 100 Free

Indian River’s Osianna McReed claimed her second gold medal of the evening with a top showing in the women’s 100 free. McReed posted a 50.22 to be the only swimmer beneath the 52-second mark.

Teammates Courtney Perrett and Sarah Dostie collected second and third place finishes of 52.04 and 53.32.

John Fauteux led Indian River to a podium sweep of the men’s 100 free, stopping the clock at a 44.46.

Fellow Pioneers Gavin Erdmann and Cameron Newton grabbed second and third with times of 44.87 and 45.38 respectively.

Women’s 200 Back

Meagan Abad of Indian River posted the top time in the women’s 200 back final at a 2:03.67, followed by teammate Courtney Stewart’s 2:05.75.

Kamryn Gallowich, also a Pioneer, finished third overall with a 2:07.92.

Men’s 200 Back

Luke Tomic of Indian River dashes ahead of the competition in the men’s 200 back, leading from the start of the race till his final touch at the 1:45.97 mark.

Teammate Jason van der Touw grabbed second overall with a 1:48.40, followed by fellow Pioneer Harrison Howeorton’s 1:49.54.

Women’s 3-meter Diving

Adrianna Warning and Domineeka Luis, both of Indian River, posted the top scores in the women’s 3-meter diving final round. Warning concluded the event with a total of 479.35 points, while Luis was second with 380.75.

Nicole Cure of Lincoln College took third with 368.85 points.

Women’s 400 Free Relay

The Indian River women completed a sweep of the relays with one final win in the 400 free relay. Courtney Stewart (52.31), Osianna McReed (50.37), Courtney Perrett (52.08), and Malin Wallen (51.77) combined to post a 3:26.53, finishing over ten seconds ahead of the competition.

Iowa Central’s Jana Burner (55.14), Kailie Valentine (56.53), Grace Nordquist (55.48), and Sandra Alonso Rivas (52.46) delivered a combined 3:39.61 for second.

Sienna Smith (54.72), Mya Falk (57.89), Angelica Lemus (56.25), and Annessa Clear (53.97) of Southwestern Oregon rounded out the top three with a 3:42.83.

Men’s 400 Free Relay

On the men’s side, the Indian River Pioneers also secured a sweep of the relays with a top showing in the 400 free relay. John Fauteux (44.59), Gavin Erdmann (44.50), Cameron Newton (44.58), and Luka Tomic (44.80) grabbed the gold with a combined time of 2:58.80.

The relay team of Keagan Wilson (47.88), Austin Monette-Waters (48.03), Nicholas Brunelli (48.86), and Lucas Wittmann (47.04) from Iowa Central turned in a final time of 3:11.81 for second.

Southwestern Oregon’s Darrin Breshears (49.44), Taden Swing (48.58), Thomas Crawford (47.83), and Caleb Dean (47.06) finished third with a 3:12.91.
