2017 Men’s Pac-12 Championships: Stanford Holds off Cal for Title

Stanford won the Pac-12 men’s championship on Saturday, finishing with 784 points. The Cardinal held off Cal, which was second with 767.

USC took third (657), Arizona State was fourth (531), Arizona was fifth (360) and Utah was sixth (257).

1,650 freestyle

Stanford’s True Sweetser won the 1,650-yard freestyle to open the final night of competition. The freshman finished in 14:35.94.

Sweetser led a 1-2-3 finish for the Cardinal with Grant Shoults (14:50.06) and Liam Egan (14:57.47.

Arizona State’s Benjamin Olszewski took fourth (15:59.49), followed by Cal’s Pawel Furtek (15:05.60), Utah’s Matteo Sogne (15:12.54), Cal’s Ryan Kao (15:13.14) and Arizona’s Jerad Kaskawal (15:20.07).

200 back

Cal’s Ryan Murphy won the 200 backstroke in 1:38.07, beating the field by nearly a second.

USC’s Patrick Mulcare finished second (1:39.37), followed by Arizona State’s Richard Bohus (1:39.52), Stanford’s Patrick Conaton (1:41.01), Stanford’s Abrahm DeVine (1:42.08), Cal’s Andy Song (1:42.98), Utah’s Justin McArthur (1:43.03) and Arizona’s Thane Maudslien (1:43.33).

Arizona State freshman Cameron Craig won the 100 freestyle in 41.95, holding off Stanford’s Sam Perry (43.30).

Cal’s Justin Lynch took third (42.49), followed by Cal’s Michael Jensen (42.63), USC’s Santo Condorelli (42.94), Arizona State’s Tadas Duskinas (43.00), USC’s Dylan Carter (43.07) and Arizona’s Jorge Iga (43.42).

200 breaststroke

USC’s Steven Stumph won the 200 breaststroke in 1:53.08 to give the Trojans a boost.

Cal’s Hunter Cobleigh took second (1:53.51), followed by Arizona State’s Christian Lorenz (1:53.87), USC’s Ridge Altman (1:54.04), Stanford’s Matt Anderson (1:54.53), and a trio of Cal swimmers — Matt Whittle (1:54.67), Nick Silverthorn (1:55.69) and Carson Sand (1:57.93).

Cal’s Andrew Seliskar won the 200 butterfly, clocking a 1:41.12 to hold off teammate Michael Thomas (1:41.83).

Arizona’s Justin Wright was third (1:41.88), followed by Stanford’s Jimmy Yoder (1:42.48), Stanford’s Tom Kremer (1:42.96), Cal’s Jack Xie (1:43.04), Arizona State’s Patrick Park (1:43.58) and Cal’s Matthew Josa (1:43.68).

Arizona State closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay.

Richard Bohus, Andrew Porter, Tadas Duskinas and Cameron Craig won the event in 2:48.95. USC finished second in 2:50.37, followed by Cal (2:50.55), Stanford (2:52.52), Arizona (2:52.79) and Utah (2:54.40).
