MIT’s Relay Record Highlights Night Two Of NEWMAC Championships

The MIT women’s 400 medley relay team highlighted Friday finals of the 2016 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships, crushing the previous meet record by over four seconds. Both the MIT men’s and women’s teams maintain a sizable lead after day two.

Women’s 200 Free Relay

MIT started the night off with a win in the 200 free relay. Amanda Wu (23.95), Margaret Guo (23.85), Jessica Chen (23.62), and Veronica Jedryka (22.97) won in 1:34.39.

Men’s 200 Free Relay

WPI’s David Smallwood (21.16), Jack Bauer (20.40), Nathan Hughes (20.37), and Andrew Bauer (20.05) combined to win in 1:21.98.

Women’s 500 Free

MIT freshman Addie Chambers won the event in 4:56.91, the only swimmer to crack five minutes. Clark’s Melissa Orzechowski finished second in 5:01.84 and WPI’s Jenny Day was third in 5:04.19.

Men’s 500 Free

MIT’s Josh Graves cruised to the win in the men’s 500, touching the wall in 4:29.99. The freshman’s time was .02 shy of the meet record.

Coast Guard’s Taylor Rowe was second in 4:34.34 and MIT’s Thomas Norris was third in 4:36.02.

Women’s 200 IM

The 200 IM title went to Mount Holyoke’s Cathleen Pruden, 2015 NEWMAC Swimmer of the Year. The senior finished with a time of 2:04.40.

MIT’s Jessica Chen touched second in 2:05.58 and Springfield’s Emily Medeiros was third in 2:09.50.

Men’s 200 IM

MIT’s Brandon McKenzie won the men’s event in 1:52.44. Coast Guard’s Dan Moreno was a close second in 1:52.60 as WPI’s Seth MacDonald rounded out the top three in 1:53.93.

Women’s 50 Free

Springfield’s Delaney Dyjak topped the women’s sprint event in 23.53. MIT’s Jedryka touched second in 23.71 as her teammate Wu placed third in 23.93.

Men’s 50 Free

MIT won their fifth event of the evening, as Josh Tomazin placed first in 20.82. WPI’s Bauer was second in 20.91 and MIT’s Daryl Neubieser and WPI’s Smallwood tied for third in 20.98.

Women’s 3m Diving

Wellesley’s Maura Sticco-Ivins dove to first in the women’s 3m with a score of 529.50. Smith’s Emily Stone was second with 493.25 and MIT’s Morgan Matranga was third with 490.15.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

MIT finished their strong night by dominating the event. The team of Jedryka (55.45), Chen (1:02.71), Guo (55.40), and Wu (52.27) won in 3:45.83. The four swimmers, who earlier in the night won the 200 free relay, crushed the old meet record by four seconds set by MIT back in 2013.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

MIT’s Bo Mattix (50.07), Justin Chiu (56.21), Dougie Kogut (48.92), and Tomazin (44.89) won the final event of the day in 3:20.09.
