Texas Longhorns Get Pair of 2020 Verbal Commitments from Ava Longi, Sydney Silver

NEW COMMITS: The University of Texas has earned a pair of verbal commitments for the fall of 2020 from Austin, Texas’ Ava Longi and Denver, Colorado’s Sydney Silver.

Both swimmers will add valuable depth to their respective training groups when they arrive in Austin as members of the Longhorns’ class of 2024. Last season, Texas earned their seventh-straight Big 12 Championship title before going on to finish fifth overall at NCAAs.

Primarily a sprint freestyler, Longi swims year-round with Western Hills Athletic Club and owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 50 free. She raced five events at College Station Speedo Sectionals in March and registered five top-8 finishes at the TXLA New Year’s Classic. At Austin Speedo Sectionals last summer, she notched four lifetime bests and finaled in the 50m free.

While representing LB Johnson High School, Longi is a six-time Texas UIL 5A State Championship finalist. She was the 50 free runner-up and took third in the 100 free as a junior after finishing eighth and 13th, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

  • 50 free – 23.38
  • 100 free – 51.00
  • 100 fly – 57.81

Sydney Silver

Silver, who does her club swimming with University of Denver Hilltoppers, owns a pair of U.S. Open cuts and placed fourth in the 100 back at Federal Way Speedo Sectionals in March. Last summer, she earned bronze in the 100m back at Colorado LCM Seniors before going on to race both backstroke events at Junior Nationals.

Also competing for Saint Mary’s Academy, Silver is a four-time Colorado 3A State Championship finalist and has also been honored with USA Swimming Scholastic All-American recognition. She won the 100 back and took third in the 100 fly as a sophomore after finishing third in the 500 free and fourth in the 200 free during her rookie campaign.

She told Swimming World:
