NCAA Men’s Championships Day 2 Prelims: Jake Magahey, Leon Marchand, Luke Hobson, Gabriel Jett Set up 500 Showdown

The first full day of the 2024 Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from Indianapolis is upon us.

The prelims events are the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle before 1-meter diving prelims.

NCAA Men’s 500 Freestyle

With all eyes on Day 1 record holders Leon Marchand and Luke Hobson, it was Georgia’s Jake Magahey that took the top seed in the 500 free.

The Georgia senior finished in 4:09.36.

The heats were extremely fast with several early swimmers reaching the top 16.

After breaking the American record in the 200 free leading off the 800 free relay, Texas junior Luke Hobson was in heat 3 of 7 in the 500 free.

Hobson was fast and consistent and won his heat in 4:10.28, just ahead of SMU’s Jack Hoagland (4:11.11). Hobson finished with the third seed for finals in 4:10.28.

The first circle-seeded heat went to Georgia’s Magahey, who finished in 4:09.36.

The next went to Texas senior Coby Corrozza, who finished in 4:10.74, just ahead of Auburn’s Mason Mathias (4:10.82).

The final heat featured Arizona State’s Leon Marchand.

Marchand took the early lead with a 21.65 first 50 and a 45.43 first 10, 1:10.01 at the 150, 1:35.26 at the 200, 2:00.81 at the 250, 2:26.67 at the 300, 2:52.76 at the 350, 3:18.81 at the 400, 3:44.53 at the 450. He finished in 4:09.54 to take the second seed overall.

Cal’s Gabriel Jett and Florida’s Jake Mitchell hung close and Jett made a late push and took second in 4:10.61. Mitchell finished in 4:11.50.

Jett took the fourth seed for finals in 4:10.61, followed by Carrozza, Mathias, Alabama’s Charlie Hawke (4:11.02) and Hoagland.

NCAA Men’s 200 IM

Cal’s Destin Lasco, the American record holder in the 200 IM, was in the sixth of eight heats in prelims but surged to the top seed in 1:39.34, the only swimmer to break 1:40 in the morning heats, breaking the pool record.

Arizona State’s Hubert Kos took the second seed in 1:40.40 and Michigan’s Gal Groumi was third (1:40.54).

The seventh heat was a tie between NC State’s Arsenio Bustos and David Schlicht of Arizona State, both finishing in 1:40.72, to tie for the fourth seed.

Texas A&M’s Baylor Nelson took the sixth seed in 1:41.23, followed by Arizona State’s Owen McDonald (1:41.24) and Texas freshman Nate Germonprez (1:41.35).

The NCAA record holder is Marchand, who did not swim the event this year (1:36.34).

NCAA Men’s 50 Free

The 50 free is another highly anticipated battle especially after prelims, led by Josh Liendo.

Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano went an 18.43, ahead of Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger (18.57) in the sixth of eight heats.

Florida’s Josh Liendo went an 18.33, just ahead of Cal’s Jack Alexy (18.44) in the seventh.

Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks went an 18.49, ahead of ASU’s Jack Dolan (18.62) in the final heat.

That left Liendo with the top seed, followed by Guiliano, Alexy, Crooks, Seeliger, Dolan, Arizona State’s Jonny Kulow (18.63) and Tennessee’s Guilherme Santos (18.76).
