NCAA Division II Championships, Night 4 Finals: Benjamin Sampson, Emily Trieschmann Each Win Third Individual Titles

The wins keep on coming for Colorado Mesa junior Benjamin Sampson and Nova Southeastern junior Emily Trieschmann at the NCAA Division II Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Both swimmers wrapped up their third individual wins in three tries Friday evening, with Sampson earning a hard-fought victory in the 100 backstroke while Trieschmann pulled away to add the 500 freestyle win to her previous triumphs in the 1000 and 200 free.

In the team competition, Trieschmann and her Nova Southeastern teammates are maintaining their lead, having established a 48.5-point lead over Colorado Mesa at the conclusion of individual events Friday night, with Drury just behind in third, but the men’s meet is tightening up. Tampa led by 48 points after Thursday, but now, the lead over Drury is down to 13 points, with Drury’s Davi Mourao leading the way in this session with a win in the 100 breaststroke.

Women’s 500 Freestyle

For the third time this meet, Nova Southeastern junior Emily Trieschmann is a national champion in dominant fashion. After previous wins in the 1000 free Wednesday evening and the 200 free Thursday, Trieschmann took care of the field in the 500 free by three seconds, with a lead of more than a second after 100 yards that she continually extended throughout the swim. Trieschmann was ranked some six seconds clear of anyone else in Division II during the season, but even as the field made inroads at the national meet, they were nowhere near catching her.

Trieschmann touched in 4:44.60 while the two swimmers who previously placed runnerup to Trischmann this week battled it out. Trieschmann’s Nova teammate Hailey Williams had the lead for several splits in the middle of the race, but Simon Fraser’s Tori Meklensek made up more than a half-second on Williams over the final 100 yards to score second place, just as she did in the 200 free. Meklensek touched in 4:47.76 while Williams, previously second in the 1000 free, earned another top-three finish in 4:47.94.

Men’s 500 Freestyle

The University of Tampa’s Santiago Corredor was unable to defend his national title in the 400 IM, falling to third as Benjamin Sampson and Cedric Buessing both eclipsed the national record in the event. But Corredor shined in the 500 free, taking the lead over from Indy’s Buessing at the 200-yard mark before eventually extending the margin to more than a second. Buessing made a run over the final 100 yards but came up just short of the title.

Corredor grabbed the win in 4:17.98, three tenths clear of Buessing’s time of 4:18.27. Buessing earned his second top-three finish of the meet following his win in the 1000 free and the aforementioned 400 IM where he was the runnerup by merely one hundredth. Wayne Staste’s Khalil Ben Ajmia placed third in 4:18.75, holding off a blazing final split of 24.81 from Oklahoma Christian’s Victor Rosado, who was three hundredths back in 4:18.78.

Women’s 100 Backstroke

In Thursday evening’s 400 medley relay, Colorado State’s Agata Naskret opened up a big lead for her team on the way to a national title. One day later, she got a win on her own as she captured the 100 backstroke title by more than a second, extending a lead that was just two tenths at the halfway point. Naskret finished in 52.52, with MSU Mankato’s Abby Gronholz taking second in 53.66, six hundredths ahead of Naskret’s Colorado Mesa teammate Lauren White (53.72).

Lynn’s Luna Mertins, the runnerup in the 100 butterfly, was in second place at the halfway point before falling to third in 53.95, just ahead of Henderson State’s Kiara Pozvai (54.18).

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Benjamin Sampson was the winner by almost two seconds in his first individual event of the meet, the 200 IM, but a day later, he had to dig deep to hold off Cedric Buessing for the title and new national record in the 400 IM. Similar story in an extremely tight 100 backstroke when the top-six finishers were separated by just four tenths while only 17-hundredths split the top-four men.

Henderson State’s Lamar Taylor was one hundredth up on Sampson at the halfway point before Sampson came home in 23.98 to claim the title in 46.02. McKendree’s Patryk Rozenek came home even faster on his way to second place, touching in 46.13. Taylor was three hundredths behind in 46.16, with Findlay’s Timothy Stollings three hundredths further adrift (46.19). Drury’s Ivan Adamchuk (46.35) and Tampa’s Parker Knollman (46.42) were not far behind the top group.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

The dominant swimmer in the women’s 100 breaststroke was Indy’s Celina Schmidt, who previously lifted her team to a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay one night earlier. Schmidt had a slight lead in the event at the halfway point before a dominant back half helped her win the title by six tenths. Schmidt touched in 1:01.11, with Lynn’s Malaika Schneider taking second in 1:01.74.

The rest of the field was separated by just two tenths, with Mines’ Jordan Tierney leading the pack at 1:01.95 and Findlay’s Katie Susi taking fourth (1:02.00).

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Drury’s Davi Mourao turned in fourth place halfway through the men’s 100 breaststroke final, but he turned on the jets with a closing split of 27.19 that was almost a second quicker than anyone else in the field. In the process, Mourao made a run at a national record which has stood since 2015. In the end, Mourao touched in 51.88, just a quarter-second shy of the 51.63 established by Nova Southeastern’s Anton Lobanov in 2015.

McKendree’s Filipe Pinheiro grabbed second in 52.45 while Indy’s Brayden Cole, the leader at the halfway point, fell to third in 52.58. Wingate’s Andres Matrijena was in contention at the midpoint before falling to fourth in 52.81.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Nova Southeastern’s Rafaela Raurich completed the sweep of the butterfly events as she neared a national record. After taking the 100 fly Thursday, the sophomore extended her lead on each 50 until she won the race by more than a second over Drury’s Mellie Wijk. Raurich touched in 1:56.17, just two tenths shy of the national record set by West Chester’s Ann Carozza two seasons ago.

Wijk took second in 1:57.35 while a sizzling finish from her Drury teammate Aurora Duncan helped Duncan jump from fifth to third, touching in 1:58.10. Colorado Mesa’s Benedict Nagy, the winner of the 400 IM, took fourth in 1:58.63, while a third Drury swimmer finished among the top-five in Maria Fe Munoz (1:59.16).

Men’s 200 Butterfly

The man who propelled McKendree to a national-record-setting swim in the 400 medley relay now has an individual win to add to his collection, and it came in dominant fashion as Jackson Lustig pulled away from the field to win by more than two seconds. Florida Tech’s Akos Hajagos tried to go with Lustig in the opening portion of the race, but he could not keep pace as Lustig stormed to a time of 1:42.15. He was 1.40 seconds shy of the national record (1:40.75) he set last year, but he got the title he desired.

The battle for second place came down to the wire as Hajagos and Drury’s Alejandro Villarejo were both fading Rollins’ Luke Dinges was surging, with a 26.66 closing split. However, Hajagos got to the wall in 1:44.57, one hundredth ahead of Villarejo (1:44.58), with Dinges three hundredths further behind (1:44.61).

Two days after taking the win in 1-meter diving, Indy’s Julio Osuna Kelly got the win in the men’s 3-meter event by a dominant margin of almost 65 points. His score of 645.15 set a new Division II record, crushing the previous tally of 618.70 set by Oakland’s Dario DiFazio all the ay back in 1994. Drury’s Charles Earl took second with 580.75, and Delta State’s Santiago Santodomingo was third (565.70).

Women’s 200 Freestyle Relay

For the second consecutive night, a women’s relay win went to Colorado Mesa, but this one came down to the wire. Colorado Mesa anchor swimmer Lauren White, third in the 100 back earlier in the night, dove in tied with Delta State’s Kaley Davis, and White came through with a 22.54 anchor leg to pull slightly ahead and secure the victory by just 12-hundredths. Agata Naskret, the winner of the 100 back, led off the team in 22.81, and Ada Qunell and Elli Williams set up White for her huge anchor performance.

Delta State came in second at 1:31.38 with Daniella Solkow, Mikayla Kloth, Jordan Kloth and Davis. Kloth gave her team with an advantage with a 22.68 second split while Davis had the team’s fastest split at 22.66 even as she could not quite keep pace with White.

Augustana’s Bryn Greenwaldt, Angelina Chan, Makoa Montgomery and Meesha Montgomery placed third in 1:31.97 while Indy, with 50 free national champion and national-record setter Kirabo Namutebi leading off in 22.55, had the lead early before falling to fourth in 1:32.16.

Men’s 200 Freestyle Relay

In the final race of the night, Henderson State put forth a huge performance to win the 200 free relay by a half-second and knock off a three-year-old national record, the first to fall in the pool on the night. Lamar Taylor, who was third in the 100 back earlier in the session, led off in 19.10 to take the lead for his team. Taylor was favored to win the national title in the 50 free, but he was disqualified in the final.

Taylor was followed by Jack Armstrong, the fifth-year swimmer who placed runnerup in the 50 free two days earlier by five hundredths. Armstrong split 18.56, by far the quickest in the field and well ahead of his 19.33 from the individual final. After that, fellow veterans Jase Pinckney and Patryke Dabrowski did enough to put Henderson State into the wall a half-second clear of the field in 1:16.50, four tenths clear of Drury’s 2021 record of 1:16.90.

Tampa placed second with the team of Ian Cooper, Tibor Tistan, Caleb Brandon and Blake Moran, while McKendree’s Mario Perez, Caleb Law, DaVante Carey and Tyson Upton took third in 1:18.48. Florida Southern, with 50 free champion Kyle Micallef splitting 19.09 on the second leg, was just behind in 1:18.65.
