Leah DeGeorge, Paul DeGrado Lead Bolles Sweep at Florida 1A States

The Florida 1A Swimming and Diving State Championships took place on Nov. 16 at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart, Fla.

Bolles continued their historic dominance in Florida high school swimming and diving, winning the girls’ meet with 381 points ahead of Pine Crest (303) and Saint Andrew’s (244). The Bolles’ boys also won with 373 points ahead of Episcopal (221) and Saint Andrew’s (216).

The meet began as Bolles’ Faith Khoo, Carly Schwab, Sasha Ramey and Emily MacDonald won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:43.50. Saint Andrew’s (1:44.97) and Pine Crest (1:45.29) finished second and third, respectively.

Cutler Bay’s Mary Smutny shaved three seconds from her prelims swim to grab the gold in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.08. Trinity Christian’s Nicole Gomez was also under the 1:50 mark with a second-place showing in 1:48.86 while Lake Highland Prep’s Alix Roy wound up third in 1:50.82.

Oxbridge’s Jennifer Secrest powered home to a win in the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 2:00.62. Pine Crest’s Andrea Santander was second in 2:01.34 and Ramey was third in 2:01.60. Secrest then went on to win the 100 fly for her second gold in 54.10, ahead of runner-up St. John Neumann’s Madeline Burt (54.62) and Episcopal’s Mary Kelley (55.69).

Trinity Christian’s Chade Nersicio splashed and dashed her way to the 50 free State title as the only swimmer under 23 seconds, doing so in a swift 22.66. Academy at the Lakes’ McKenna Smith touched the wall second in 23.29 and Burt grabbed third in 23.37.

After taking second in 50 free, Santander found herself on top of the podium in the 100 free with a time 49.69. One-tenth behind her was Smutny in 49.79 and Bolles’ Adair Sand was third in 49.90 to also crack the 50-second barrier. Saint Andrew’s Shayna Fetes got her hands to the wall first in the 100 breast, touching in 1:03.07 to defend her title. Trinity Prep’s Jenessa Schwarz (1:03.62) was second and Schwab (1:04.49) was third.

Bolles’ Leah DeGeorge cruised to first in the 500 free, shaving over four seconds from her prelims time to win in 4:49.78. Gomez finished second in 4:52.88 and PK Yonge Lain Shahboz took third in 4:53.38. Shahboz later won the 100 back in 54.95 ahead of Bradenton Christian’s Anna Freed (55.42) and Kelley (55.45).

University’s Maia Goldstein dove to first on the 1-meter board, finishing with a final score of 504.90. Second went to Berkeley’s Nicole Stambo with a final score of 476.00 and third went to Pine Crest’s Ishani Singh with 444.20 points.

Trinity Christian’s Gomez, Naima Dressout, Hailey Rudd and Nersicio won a close 4×50 free relay in 1:34.25. Bolles was right behind in 1:34.39 for second followed by Pine Crest in third with a time of 1:34.83. Bolles’ Megan McGrath, Camila Batista, Ashley Khoo and DeGeorge won the 4×100 free relay in 3:25.14, followed by Pine Crest (3:26.75) and Trinity Christian (3:27.44).

Boys Meet

Just like the girls, the Bolles’ quartet of Jackson Kirk, Paul DeGrado, Daniel Bowen and Rafael Ponce DeLeon won the 4×50 medley relay in 1:33.43. Saint Andrew’s took second in a close 1:33.81 while Berkeley Prep was third in 1:34.71.

Trinity Prep’s Luke Uttley posted a two-second victory in the 200 free, winning in 1:37.86. STAD Thomas Piza also snuck under the 1:40 mark in 1:39.70 for second while PK Yonge’s Trevor McGovern finished in 1:40.01 for third. Uttley then went on to defend his 100 free title in 44.87 ahead of Berkeley Prep’s Matthew Dieffenthaller (45.02) and Trinity Prep’s Jan Collazo Torres (45.03).

Soon after helping his relay to gold, DeGrado was back to claim victory in the 200 IM as the only swimmer under 1:50 with a winning time of 1:49.59. Second went to King’s Academy’s Joshua Zuchowski (1:50.21) and third went to Jace Crawford (1:51.56). Zuchowski later won the 100 back in 49.20 ahead of PK Yonge Trevor McGovern (49.56) and Saint Andrew’s Joshua Balbi (50.05).

Episcopal’s Sterling Crane won a close 50 free battle, getting his hand to the wall first in a quick 20.32. Collazo Torres wasn’t far behind in 20.38 for second and Dieffenthaller swam to third in 20.64. Quickly after a 50 free victory, Crane was back in the pool and flew to first in the 100 fly with a time of 47.76. Also under the 50-second barrier were St. Johns Country Day’s Nick Rogers (49.18) and Balbi (49.65).

Shorecrest Prep’s Caleb Kravitz won the 500 free in 4:29.27, not too far ahead of runner-up Brendan Peacock of Evangelical Christian’s in 4:29.41. Crawford finished third in 4:30.00. DeGrado got his hands to the wall first in the 100 breast, stopping the clock in 54.76 for the win. Second went to Bolles’ Cobi Lopez Miro (55.85) and third went to Berkeley Prep’s Ryaan Hatoum (57.16).

Pine Crest’s Kevin Mendez dove to first on the 1-meter board, finishing with a final score of 533.75. Second went to Tampa Prep’s Nicholas Carlin with a final score of 523.80 and third went to Pine Crest’s Denny Gulia-Janovski with 498.40 points.

Berkeley Prep’s Dieffenthaller, Peter Tanner, Jr., Logan Ingerick and Jack Harrison combined to win the 4×50 free relay by a full second ahead of St. Andrew’s (1:24.64) and Bolles (1:25.02). Bolles’ Kirk, DeGrado, Ethan Thomas and Noah Emerson concluded the meet with a win in the 4×100 free relay in 3:05.41, ahead of Episcopal (3:06.16) and Saint Andrew’s (3:06.75).
