Carson Foster’s National HS Record Highlights Fast Ohio Boys DI Championships; Jake Foster, Adam Chaney Break State Marks

The 2019 Ohio Boys DI State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the C. T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.

A total of seven Ohio state records were broken at this meet:

Sycamore High School – 4×50 medley relay (1:28.48)
Sycamore’s Carson Foster – 200 free (1:32.99) **National HS record**
Sycamore’s Jake Foster – 200 IM (1:43.99)
Mason’s Adam Chaney – 50 free (19.64)
Mason’s Adam Chaney – 100 free (43.27)
Sycamore’s Carson Foster – 100 back (46.28)
Sycamore’s Jake Foster – 100 breast (53.53)

It proved to be a fast and competitive meet. Despite Sycamore setting five state records, St. Xavier used their impressive depth to secure their 11th-straight team title with a final score of 310. Sycamore finished second with 240 points followed by St. Francis De Sales (159).

Sycamore’s Carson Foster (21.44), Jake Foster (23.86), Ansel Froass (22.27) and Elliott Carl (20.91) began the meet with a bang as they combined in 1:28.48 to take down St. Xavier’s state record of 1:29.66 set in 2017. St. Xavier took second in 1:28.94 while North Canton Hoover was third in 1:30.21.

C. Foster stole the show in the 200 free, setting a new National High School record with a blazing-fast 1:32.99 to also crush his own state record of 1:33.38 set during prelims. He was well ahead of runner-up Jay Johnson (1:36.70) of Hudson and Walnut Hills’ Aaron Sequeira was third in 1:37.57.

Texas commit J. Foster won the 200 IM by nearly five seconds in 1:43.99, the same exact time he swam during prelims to tie his own Ohio state record. The old record of 1:48.52 was set by Waynesville’s Owen Conley last night at the DII Championships. Froass gave Sycamore a 1-2 finish in the event by taking second in 1:48.27 as Westerville North’s Andrew Bernsdorf took third in 1:49.29.

Chaney splashed-and-dashed his way to a win in the 50 free with a time of 19.79, only a tenth off his own state record of 19.69 he set during prelims as the only swimmer to crack the 20-second mark. Dover’s Hunter Armstrong (20.14) and Dublin Jerome’s Max Scott (20.42) finished second and third, respectively.

St. Xavier’s Jean-Pierre Khouzam, who has given Virginia an early verbal, flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, getting his hands to the wall first in 47.21 – just shy of Austin Staab’s state record of 47.10. Shaker Heights’ Chachi Gustafson was 1.5 seconds behind in 48.71 for second and Twinsburg’s Colin Martin raced to third in 48.75.

Lyle Yost of Shaker Heights dove to first on the 1-meter board for the third-straight year, posting a final score of 571.20 for the win. Powell Olentangy Liberty’s Jack Matthews placed second with 534.00 points and New Albany’s Jordan Rzepka took third with a total score of 505.45.

Chaney showed his sprint talent by adding the 100 free title to his 50 free gold from earlier. His final time of 43.67 was four-tenths off his state record-setting time of 43.27 he set during prelims. Armstrong again grabbed silver in 44.27 and Johnson earned bronze in 44.43.

The 500 free gold medal went to Liberty Township Lakota East’s Jacob McDonald, a future Tennessee Vol, raced to the wall in 4:22.17. St. Xavier’s Grady Wheeler swam to the runner-up spot in 4:25.94 and Grove City’s Spencer Tussing raced to third in 4:32.25.

St. Xavier’s JP Khouzam (21.54), Owen Taylor (20.51), Ian Van Gorp (20.89) and Khouzam (19.75) combined to with the 4×50 free relay in 1:22.69. Completing the top three podium finishers were North Canton Hoover (1:23.03) and Mason (1:23.18). Chaney’s 19.64 lead-off split lowered the state record yet again.

C. Foster added another gold to his growing hardware collection by taking first in the 100 back. His final time of 46.62 was just off his Ohio state record-setting mark of 46.28 he set during prelims. Second place went to Sequeira in 47.81 and third belonged to Cleveland St. Ignatius’s Tyler Hong in 48.75.

The Foster brothers were on fire tonight, as J. Foster added another title in the 100 breast with a final time of 53.76. His time was just off the 53.53 he set during prelims for the state record; the old record was set by Bowling Green’s CJ Layne (54.48) at the DII Championships. St. Xavier’s Scott Sobolewski (54.25) and Milford’s Tyler Babinec (54.34) rounded out the top three.

Sycamore’s Froass (46.06), Noah Patterson (46.76), J. Foster (44.06) and C. Foster (43.09) concluded the meet by winning the 4×100 free relay in 2:59.97. St. Xavier (3:01.79) and Dublin Jerome (3:05.34) completed the podium.
