Australian Short Course Championships: Emma McKeon, Mitch Larkin Win Twice

The Australian Short Course Championships continued on Friday with a full slate of events and some of the top swimmers in the world turning in strong performances so far in the meet.

Emma McKeon and Mitch Larkin each won two events on a night with plenty of close races.

In the first men’s event of the evening, Kyle Chalmers and Eli Winnington were locked in a duel until the touch in the 200 Free.

Chalmers won the event in 1:43.76, edging Winnington by a mere hundredth of a second.

Alexander Graham finished third in 1:44.10. and Cameron McEvoy was fourth (1:44.40).

Emma McKeon cruised to a victory in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 56.72. Her time was nearly two seconds ahead of her prelims time and a second and a half ahead of the rest of the field.

Laura Taylor finished second in 58.16, followed by Gemma Cooney (58.83) and Jemma Schlicht (59.31).

Mitch Larkin was the next star to cruise to an easy victory. He won the 200 back in1:49.07, more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Jordan Merrilees was second in 1:51.31, followed by Tristan Hollard (1:52.97) and Peter Mills (1:53.73).

Minna Atherton finished just three hundredths behind at 56.66 after closing with a 14.51 split.

After winning the 200 back, Larkin held on for a close victory in the 200 IM. Larkin won the race in 1:53.02, dropping his prelims time by more than four seconds.

Matthew Wilson finished second in 1:53.93, followed by Travis Mahoney (1:54.98) and David Schlicht (1:55.72).
