Florian Wellbrock Goes 14:42 For 1500 Free Victory: Lukas Märtens & Isabel Gose Back On Top Of The Podium

Florian Wellbrock returned after disappointment in the 800 free to win the 1500 on the final day of the German Championships in Berlin.

The 26-year-old had already booked his spot on the team for Paris 2024 courtesy of his silver medal behind Daniel Wiffen at the 2024 World Championships in February.

The 1500 will be his sole swim in the pool in the French capital in July after he fell short of claiming the second ticket in the 800 with Oliver Klemet joining Sven Schwarz in the 16-length race.

On Sunday, Wellbrock – the Olympic bronze medallist in the 1500 – claimed the title in 14:42.48, well clear of Schwarz and Klemet who finished in 14:49.22 and 14:58.64.

It has been some meet for Lukas Märtens who rattled the 400 free WR in 3:40.33 before firing off a 1:44.14 PB in the 200 free to go top of the 2024 rankings as well as third over 100.

On Sunday, he returned to the Berlin pool for the 200 back where he split 55.89/60.11 to go within 0.13 of Jan-Philip Glania’s national record of 1:55.87 that has stood since the 2012 German Championships.

It was another PB for Märtens, surpassing the 1:56.18 that had seen him already inside the 1:57.50 QT coming into the trials.

Christian Diener went 1:58.22 ahead of Cornelius Jahn who was third home in 1:58.58.

Maya Werner won the women’s race in 2:11.54 with Lise Seidel following her home in 2:13.56.

Isabel Gose claimed her fourth title in as many races with victory in the 800 by more than eight seconds in 8:19.48, the third-swiftest time of her career topped by the 8:17.53 PB en-route to silver at the Doha worlds behind Simona Quadarella.

It saw Gose sweep the 200/400/800/1500 free quadruple with the possibility of a busy schedule in Paris on the horizon.

Moesha Johnson (8:27.56) and Leonie Märtens (8:33.40) completed the podium.

Artem Selin booked himself a spot in the 50 free in 21.90 – 0.06 inside the cut.

It was 0.07 outside the 21.83 PB that secured him the 2019 European junior title and a further 0.02 off Damian Wierling’s German record of 21.81 that has stood for eight years since the 2016 national championships.

Josha Salchow – who has a Paris berth in the 100 free – was second in 22.06 with Moritz Schaller third on 22.38.

Nina Jazy set an age group record of 24.91 to take the women’s title with Jessica Felsner taking second 0.02 ahead of Nele Schulze in 25.12 to 25.14.

Maximilian Pilger won the men’s 200 breaststroke in 2:12.15, well outside the 2:09.68 QT, while Marco Koch clocked 2:13.19 as he fell short in his bid for a fourth Olympics 12 years after his Games debut at London 2012.

Lena Ludwig added the women’s 200 title to her 100 gold and 50 silver, the 16-year-old clocking an age group record of 2:27.45 ahead of Kim Herkle (2:29.69)., the pair the only women inside 2:30.

Marek Ulrich went 53.71 in a 100 back time trial, dipping inside the cut of 53.74.

Luca Armbruster won the men’s non-Olympic 50 fly title in 23.30 with Angelina Köhler adding the one-length gold to her 100 fly victory in 25.99.
