Steve Potsklan Swaps Fordham for SUNY Maritime as Head Coach

Former Fordham University head coach Steve Potsklan has switched his addresses in the Bronx, hired Monday as the head coach of SUNY Maritime College.

Potsklan stepped down from Fordham with little fanfare on Aug. 22. (Fordham has not, as of yet, announced a replacement, either on an interim or a full-time basis.) The two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year hasn’t even had to leave the borough, going from Division I to the Division III SUNY outfit in Throggs Neck. He will serve as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs and as its aquatics director.

“It’s a great honor to be named Head Swimming & Diving Coach and Aquatics Director at Maritime College,” Potsklan said in a SUNY Maritime statement. “I’d like to thank Athletic Director Mike Berkun for his trust in me and the opportunity to lead this great program. I look forward to creating something special here, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Potsklan spent 31 years at Fordham. He was named Atlantic 10 women’s coach of the year in 2008-09 and 2009-10. He led Fordham to its first A-10 swimming title in 2010 and the university’s first Atlantic 10 championship in any women’s sport, unseating then eight-time reigning champion Richmond. That year also brought the best finish for the Rams men’s team in fourth.

Potsklan coached 51 Atlantic 10 and four ECAC champions. That includes 2012 NCAA Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier Brienne Ryan and 2020 Atlantic 10 Championships Most Outstanding Swimmer, Amelia Bullock.

Potsklan also spent five years as an assistant coach at Yale before coming to Fordham. He also coached at the University of West Virginia and Texas, as well as the Mountaineer Swim Club, camps at Texas and the University of Alabama and Omni Swim Club.
