NCAA Division II Championships, Day Five Prelims: Nova Southeastern Women, Tampa and Drury Men Battling for Team Titles

The final prelims session of the Division II Championships will go a long way in determining whether the Nova Southeastern women will be able to defend their title from a year ago. More, Tampa and Drury are locked in a tight battle for the men’s championship, with Tampa holding a slim 13-point advantage entering the final day of competition.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Henderson State’s Kiara Pozvai, who was third in the 50 freestyle, nailed down the top seed for the final with a mark of 49.08. Four women dipped under the 50-second barrier, with the Lynn University tandem of Luna Mertins (49.32) and Laura Dekoninck (49.81) going two-three for the morning.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Henderson State’s Jack Armstrong (42.63) and Nova Southeastern’s Marcel Snitko (42.95) turned in the only sub-43 efforts of the prelims, while Lamar Taylor was in the third position following a mark of 43.11. Taylor was the top seed for the final of the 50 freestyle before being disqualified in the final. The senior will be hungry for some redemption.

In the team battle, Tampa put a pair of athletes in the final to help the program’s pursuit of a championship. Ian Cooper was fifth in the morning, while Blake Moran was sixth.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

Alexandra Waller of Drury narrowly claimed the top seed in the 200 backstroke, as her swim of 1:57.69 was a tenth quicker than West Florida’s Nina Imboden. Lurking in third place is Colorado Mesa’s Agata Naskret, who went 1:57.86 for her prelim outing. Naskret won the 100 backstroke earlier in the meet and is one of three Colorado Mesa athletes to qualify for the final. Colorado Mesa entered Day Five in second place in the team race.

Men’s 200 Backstroke

The Tampa duo of Parker Knollman (1:42.08) and Santiago Corredor (1:43.07) fueled their school’s team-title chances by advancing as the first and third seeds. Meanwhile, Colorado Mesa’s Ben Sampson moved on as the second seed and will try to earn his fourth solo championship of the meet during the night session. Sampson has already won both medley events, along with the 100 backstroke.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Drury’s Claire Conover and Mellie Wijk qualified first and third for the final of the 200 breaststroke. Conover led the way with a time of 2:12.46, and was followed by Indy’s Celina Schmidt at 2:13.09. Helping Nova Southeastern in defense of its title, Emilia Ronningdal went 2:15.15 to finish fourth in the morning.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Oklahoma Christian’s John Amrein secured the top seed for the 200 breaststroke by the slimmest of margins. Amrein covered his morning swim in 1:56.27, which was .01 faster than the mark of McKendree’s Filipe Pinheiro. Drury’s Davi Mourao and Joao Nogueira were third and fourth.
