Mia Cheatwood, Ada Szwabinska Lead West Virginia to Tri-Meet Sweep

Mia Cheatwood and Ada Szwabinska won two individual events and two relays apiece as West Virginia swept a tri-meet against Iowa State and Villanova Saturday.

West Viginia bested Villanova, 173.5-125.5 and Iowa State, 191-108. Villanova topped Iowa State, 180-119, in the other meet.

On the men’s side, West Virginia beat Villanova handily, 234-66.

Cheatwood went 1:01.15 to win the 100 breaststroke and 2:11.92 to dominate the field in the 200 breast. Szwabinska swept the sprints, going 22.90 in the 50 free and 50.60 in the 100 free.

The duo paired with Victoria Kidney and Lilly Culp to win the 200 medley relay, and Makenna Wozny and Gabriela Martin De La Torre to secure the 400 free relay.

De La Torre was part of the race of the day, tying for the win with Villanova’s Molly Benson in the 200 free, both going 1:50.11. De La Torre was second to Benson in the 500 free.

Culp won the 100 fly and was second in the 200 fly. Shelby Gerving made it a 1-2 in the 200 breast with Cheatwood, then won the 400 individual medley. The Mountaineers got a boost in diving with Sarah Kusinski winning 1-meter with 288.70 points ahead of mate Abigail Sullivan. That pair was second and third on 3-meter. Sara Haggerty set a program record on platform with 287.85 points.

Villanova picked up wins starting with its distance contingent. Marlene Blanke swam away with the mile. Benson did the 200/500 free double. Audrey Pastorek swept the backstroke events, with a time of 55.21 in the 100 and 1:59.61 in the 200. Katie White won the 200 fly in 1:59.86. Anna Farley was second in the 400 IM, as was Lainey Quinones in the 50 and 100 free.

Iowa State’s lone win came from Kate Mitchell, who scored 291.30 on 3-meter to top the field. Fallon DeWitt was second in the 200 back. Andie Quirke and Brinley Horras posted two third-place finishes each.

West Virginia’s men went 1-2 in each of the first 10 individual events until Villanova’s Charlie Hinckley won the 500 free.

Danny Berlitz won two individual events, taking home the 200 back and 400 IM. Max Nielsen won the 200 free ahead of Conner McBeth, then McBeth got the better of him in the 100 free. McBeth and Justin Heimes, the winner of the 100 back, were on both winning relays.

Owen Recker edged teammate Glenn Eloriaga in 1-meter diving, then the pair swapped places on 3-meter.
