Madison Central Girls, Tupelo Boys Capture Mississippi Class 2 Victories

As at the Class 1 meet, at the Class 2 Mississippi High School swimming state championships two teams split first and second place honors. The Madison Central girls dominated, scoring 134 points while Tupelo amassed 97. On the boys’ side, Tupelo scored 125 to walk away with the win. With 51 points Madison Central was second. That was the 11th straight title for the Tupelo boys.

Girls

Madison Central jumped out to an early lead. Cassie HowellMallory DickeyMaddie Howell, and Megan Staehling won the 200 medley relay in 1:50.01, three seconds faster than Tupelo’s Katy WestMattie HughesCelester Turner, and Caroline Woodward (1:53.03).

Gabrielle Ivey of Ocean Springs upset Turner in the 200 free as the two finished in 1:52.62 and 1:53.06. Turner returned to win the 100 fly in 55.94, a new state record. Maddie Howell was second (58.11). Howell won the 50 free (24.79). Her sister Cassie clocked a 53.68 for 100 free gold.

Dickey claimed Madison Central’s first individual win of the night with a 2:12.85 200 IM over Hughes (2:13.81).

It was all Ella Gibbs (Madison Central) in the 500 free. She raced to a 5:04.60. Hughes (5:17.41) was runner up again.

Ivey was a double winner with a 57.95 in the 100 back. Cassie Howell (58.26) and Dickey (59.19) followed.

Brandon High School’s Lindsey Patrick out touched Germantown High School’s Natalie Cox 1:09.05 to 1:09.33 for the 100 breaststroke.

Maddie Howell, Staehling, Olivia Smith, and Gibbs teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay for Madison Central in 1:41.36. The team used Cassie Howell, Gibbs, Smith, and Dickey to top the 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.99.

Boys

Tupelo began the meet where they ended it: on top of the podium. John Michael CaldwellHayden HendersonAnder Pearce McDade, and Cooper King (1:39.63) won the 200 medley relay in convincing fashion.

Tupelo’s Donovan Crossen won the 200 freestyle. Madison Central’s Blake Peeples (1:43.03) was second. Crossen also captured 100 free victory (46.33).

Center Hill High School’s Taylor Williams cleared two minutes (1:58.74) to win the 200 IM. He also won the 100 breaststroke with a 56.84. Henderson (58.39) was also under a minute.

Brandon High School’s Khameron Glass won the 50 free (21.22) and 100 back (50.51). Alex Miller, from Oak Grove High School won the 100 fly in 50.04. Henderson was second (52.10) again. Madison Central’s Blake Peeples topped the 500 free with his 4:32.43.

In the 200 freestyle relay Tupelo touched in 1:29.84 with the team of Crossen, Henderson, King, and Caldwell. Crossen, McDade, King, and Christian Simpson made it a relay trifecta with a 400 free relay victory in 3:23.69.

Thank you, he had a great day. The IM he messed up on due to stomach issues but still got 1st but killed it in the 100 breast and broke the State record. On our way back to Olive Branch now.
