Georgetown Claims Pair of Wins over Howard in Second Battle at the Burr

Georgetown came out with a pair of wins over Washington, D.C., rival Howard in the second Battle at the Burr on Saturday.

The Hoyas’ men’s team claimed a 125-99 win, while the women prevailed, 127-97.

The women’s meet was controlled early on by Howard. The Bison women started in emphatic fashion by setting a school record in the 200 medley relay with the team of Chanice Posada, Zaylie-Elizabeth Thompson, Zuilda Nwaeze and Isabella Fountain going 1:43.69, slashing 2.31 seconds off the mark from last year’s conference meet. Howard won three individual events in the front half of the meet before the pendulum swung back to Georgetown.

Battle at the Burr Results

Erin Hood was a big reason why. She won the 500 freestyle in 5:07.54, a 1-2 with teammate Sophia Ribiero. The very next event, she outdueled Thompson by .09 seconds to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.35.

The tide turned with a pair of Georgetown 1-2s after the men’s diving break. Genevieve Youngman and Angelica Reali went 1-2 in a hectic 100 butterfly, Youngman winning in 56.67 and Reali edging Nwaeze by .02 for second in 56.69. Madeline Malone and Isabella Wiley went 1-2 in the 100 free, then Maddie Haley outtouched Posada by .22 in 58.47 in the 100 backstroke.

Georgetown also went 1-2 in the 1,000 free via Kira Agne and Ashley Vensel. Liz Durgin led a 1-2-3 sweep of 1-meter diving.

Nwaeze won the 200 free in 153.51. Fountain followed with a 23.99 to win the 50 ahead of Wylie, and Thompson claimed the 200 individual medley in a sensational race with Georgetown’s Alex Breuer, outtouching her by a tenth in 2:08.62.

The men’s race started with the dramatic, Howard winning the opening 200 medley relay by .01 seconds. Tristan Stevens, Mark-Anthony Thompson, Taj Benton and Arion Solomon went 1:31.96 to get the win. Howard would also finish the meet by winning the 200 free relay in 1:23.66 (Solomon, Spencer Miles, Benton, Stevens).

Georgetown stamped its authority on the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM, led by Jack Brearton’s time of 1:54.71. The Hoyas also went 1-2 in the 1,000 free, led by Jack Januario’s 9:56.25. Connor Jelig won the 500 free in 4:43.55.

Bailey De Luise helped seal the meet by leading a 1-2 in the 100 breast in 56.90. Grant Closson won the 100 free, and Shaun Kroenwetter won the 50 free.

Howard got an early win from Mason Green in the 200 free (1:42.44). He finished second to Benton (49.98) in the 100 fly. Stevens won the 100 back in 51.45.
