Yulia Groysman Among Multiple Event Winners at 2015 Washington Girls High School State Championships

The 2015 Washington Girls High School State Championships took place this past weekend at the King County Aquatics Center with the three separate divisions running at separate times.

2A

Krista Wilson of Ellensburg blasted to the top of the podium in the 200 free, posting a winning time of 1:55.27. Ellie Hohensinner of Liberty (Renton) turned in a 1:57.67 for second, while Ella Van Troba of Naches Valley was third with a 1:58.06.

Taylor McCoy of Pullman pulled away from the competition in the 200 IM leaving a gap between herself and the competition. McCoy turned in a final time of 2:07.82. Squalicum’s Yanran Le and Liberty (Renton’s) Abby Russell kept it close for second and third. Le stopped the clock at 2:11.02 over Russell’s 2:11.63.

Mackenzie Norman of Cheney earned her first win of the day in the 50 free, posting a final time of 24.22. Later, Norman continued her sprinting prowess in the 100 free finishing with a time of 52.74, shaving .41 seconds off her prelims time of 53.15.

Kaelee McCloskey of Archbishop Murphy grabbed a win in the 100 fly with a time of 58.72. SQUA’s Olivia Nielsen finished second in the event with a 59.06, while Highline’s Reva Zacharias delivered a time of 59.57 for third.

McCoy neared the AAA time standard of 55.31 in the 100 back with a time of 56.45, finishing over two seconds ahead of the competition. Lauryn Hepp of Liberty (Renton) took second with a time of 58.76 and was the only other athlete in the event under the one-minute mark.

  • Ellie Hohensinner, Liberty (Renton) — 500 Free (5:07.66)
  • McKenna Troje, Sammamish — 1 Meter Diving (294.55)
  • Yanran Le, Squalicum — 100 Breast (1:04.68)

Liberty (Issaquah) High School were the overall winners of the meet.

Cameron Smith of Seattle Preparatory School and Hannah Shabb of Lakeside (Seattle) battled for first in the 200 free, but it was Smith who got to the wall first. Smith stopped the clock at a 1:52.11 over Shabb’s 1:52.76.

Smith grabbed her second win of the day in the 500 free posting a final time of 4:58.64 to make her the only athlete under the five-minute mark in the event.

Senior Jocelyn Crawford of Garfield ended her high school career by collecting a pair of wins. Crawford first showed her speed in the 50 free, turning in a final time of 23.41, down .24 seconds from her prelims time of 23.65. Crawford’s time was .49 seconds off the state record of 22.92.

Crawford grabbed her second win of the day in the 100 back finishing with a time of 56.37, finishing almost two seconds ahead of the competition.

Sabrina Kwan of Mercer Island and Mandolin Nguyen of Franklin kept it close in the 100 fly, finishing less than a second apart. Kwan won out with a time of 56.44, while Nguyen settled for second and a time of 56.83.

Nguyen would go on to win a tight battle with Angela Gagliardo of John F. Kennedy in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.55. Gagliardo took second with a time of 1:04.65.

  • Marley Cross, Garfield — 100 Free (51.65)

Lakeside (Seattle) High School were the overall winners of the meet.

Freshmen Yulia Groysman of Newport (Bellevue) and Sarah DiMeco of Skyline got the meet to a quick start by turning in a pair of 1:51’s in the 200 free. Groysman grabbed the win with a time of 1:51.21 over DiMeco’s 1:51.52.

The two young stars continued their battle for the middle-distance titles into the 500 free, where the pair were once again 1-2. Groysman delivered a swift 4:56.68 for the title, while DiMeco finished second with a 5:00.13.

Nicole Limberg of Jackson collected a pair of individual wins over the course of the day. Limberg first pulled away from the competition in the 200 IM, finishing with a 2:05.17, over two seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

Limberg later stopped the clock at a 1:03.53 for a win in the 100 breaststroke. Skyline’s Danika Himes came in second with a 1:04.88, while Gig Harbor’s Ursula Andren finished third with a 1:05.02.

Jessica Wierzbicki of Wenatchee and Emma Carlton of Mount Vernon kept it close in the 100 fly, finishing .02 second apart. Wierzbicki managed to get her hand to the wall first, stopping the clock at 54.42 over Carlton’s 54.44.

  • Kelsea Hinkley, Richland — 1 Meter Diving (421.70)
  • Willow Lopez-Silvers, Curtis — 100 Free (52.39)
  • Emma Frey, Mount Vernon — 100 Back (56.70)

Skyline High School were the overall winners of the meet.
