York Girls Claim Team’s First VHSL Class 3 Championship

At the 2018 VHSL Class Three State Championships in Richmond, VA the York High School girls won the team’s first swimming and diving state championships. The last time the school won a team state title was in 1997, when the cross country team took home the state crown. York scored 352 points. Western Albemarle was second with 295 points. Western Albermarle won for boys with 467.5 points.

Girls

The York girls made school history, sweeping the relay events. The highlight of those relays came in the 200 medley, where Alex SlaytonDanika KatzerAlyssa Reilly, and Megan Gaffney set a new class three state record with a time of 1:46.60.

Tennessee commit Katzer also took home 100 breaststroke gold in 1:03.23 and was runner up in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.26. Cave Spring’s Emma Muzzy won the 200 IM, stopping the clock in 1:57.57, faster than Cassidy Bayer‘s VHSL record and her own Class 3 state mark. York’s freshman Bella Kimbel was third (2:13.55).

Muzzy’s second victory came in the 100 backstroke. There the NC State commit touched in 54.08, lowering Olivia Bray‘s Class 3 record of 54.20. York’s Reilly (59.07) finished second.

This year Bray, only a sophomore, won the 100 butterfly in 53.71. The Lord Botetourt swimmer was runner up in the 100 freestyle with a 51.82. Slayton took gold in 100 free (51.54). In the 50 free Slayton was first to the wall with a 23.41, breaking Muzzy’s state record by only .01. Slayton, who will head to Virginia Tech in the fall, is the first athlete ever at York to win individual and relay titles for all four years of her high school career.

Abigail Fuller, a freshman at Fluvanna County High School, is already only a half second shy of the record, touching second in 23.88. Lord Botetourt also got a victory from freshman Miranda Kirtley who won the 500 free in 5:01.79.

In the 200 freestyle relay Slayton, Reilly, Katzer, and Megan Gaffney won the event by three seconds in 1:38.54. The 400 freestyle relay crew was Kimbel, Caroline ParzialeRose McMullen, and Laura Gaffney, finishing first in 3:42.28.

Boys

Despite winning the team title, West Albermarle won just one relay- the 200 freestyle. There August LambJohnny Riordan, Jason Heilman, and Noah Hargrove were first to the wall by nearly three seconds, in 1:27.61.

Lamb won the 100 freestyle in a Class 3 record of 46.15. Northside senior Richie Evans was second in 47.69. Lamb was also second in the 200 free (1:42.33) behind Nike Talati of Tabb in 1:41.30. Evans finished third (1:45.01).

In the 100 butterfly Talati finished second (50.75), a mere .03 behind Evan Weakley (50.72), a Spotswood junior. Weakley earned a second of his own, finishing in 21.58 in the 50 freestyle. Brentsville’s Ryan Hutcherson earned that gold, racing to a 21.26. Tabb’s Cj Omweg topped the 100 backstroke in 51.96.

Keith Myburgh was a double winner and double Class 3 record holder. The Hidden Valley senior will head to Virginia Tech next year. First, he won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. His 200 IM time of 1:49.68 was nearly a second faster than his own 2017 mark. In the 100 breaststroke he finished in 55.62, under his own Class 3 record, and faster than the VHSL mark. His sophomore brother Collin finished second in 57.56.

Myburgh’s senior teammate Jason Hamilton won the 500 freestyle in 4:36.85 and touched third in the 50 (21.59).

With Myburgh, Myburgh, Hamilton, and Colin Gibbons Hidden Valley took down the Class 3 200 medley relay record with a 1:34.24. Maxwell Crutchfield, Hamilton, Caleb Atkins, and Keith Myburgh won the 400 freestyle relay by six seconds in 3:14.06.
