Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh Earns ACC’s Mary Garber Award
Gretchen Walsh has added to her bundle of honors by winning the ACC’s Mary Garber Award as the conference’s female student-athlete of the year on Wednesday.
She is just the third Virginia athlete to win the award and joins rarefied air, in basketball star player and coach Dawn Staley in 1991 and 1992 and soccer player Morgan Brian in 2015.

Walsh is the ACC Women’s Swimmer of the Year, the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Swimming and Diving, the Honda Sport Award winner and the CSCAA Swimmer of the Year. She helped Virginia win the ACC for the fifth straight time and to claim its fourth consecutive NCAA title.
Walsh set four American records at the ACC Championships on the way to seven gold medals. She was the most valuable swimmer at that meet. She won the NCAA title in the 50 freestyle, 100 free and 100 butterfly, setting NCAA records in all, to go with four relay gold medals.
Walsh set a world record in the women’s 100-meter fly at U.S. Olympic Trials last month to book her first trip to the Olympics. She would go on to win the 100 fy and finish second in the 50 free, while she’ll also have relay duties in the Paris Games.
