Virginia High School League Reschedules State Championships; Torri Huske Record Chase on Hold

The Virginia High School League (VHSL), due to impending inclement weather, has rescheduled various classifications of its state championships. The Class 6 chanpionship meet, which features the biggest schools, will now be held on Feb. 25 at the Jeff Rouse Swim and Sports Center, with the Class 5 competition being held at the same facility on Feb. 24. Rather than a prelims-finals format, the meets will take place as timed finals.

The Class 4 championship meet will be held on Feb. 23 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, with Class 3 taking place on Feb. 25 and Class 2 slated for March 6, also at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

The Class 6 meet will feature Yorktown’s Torri Huske, who is scheduled to contest the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly, and has the potential to challenge national high school records in each event. Huske holds entry times of 1:54.90 in the individual medley and 50.67 in the 100 butterfly. The national record in the medley stands at 1:53.82, set by Dagny Knutson in 2009, while the 100 fly record is 50.35, set by Claire Curzan last year and equaled by Curzan last weekend. Huske’s 50.67 in the fly is the public-school record.

On the boys’ side, Texas recruit Anthony Grimm is the top seed in the 50 freestyle at 20.14 and seeded first in the 100 breaststroke at 54.81.
