Virginia 6A State Finalist Lucas Johnson Verbally Commits to Duke Blue Devils

NEW COMMIT: Duke University has gained a new in-state verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Fredericksburg, Va. native Lucas Johnson.

Primarily a sprint freestyler, Johnson swims year-round with the Rappahannock YMCA Swim Team and owns a trio of Winter Juniors standards. He most recently competed at the Eastern Zone Senior Championships where he earned gold in the 200m free with three additional top-10 finishes. This past winter, he notched four best times at NCSAs after placing sixth in the 100 free at Virginia Seniors. A rising senior at Colonial Forge High School, Johnson earned bronze in the 200 free and took eighth in the 100 fly as a junior at the Virginia 6A State Championships.

He told Swimming World:

“I am beyond excited to announce my commitment to the Duke University Swim team. I know Duke is a place I can excel in my swimming and my academics, and a place where the team is a part of Blue Devils’ culture. There is excellent environment encouraged by the coaches and swimmers that I know will continue to fuel my training. Go Blue Devils!!!”

His best times include:

50 free – 20.69
100 free – 45.11
200 free – 1:38.85
100 fly – 49.70

When he suits up for the Blue Devils as a member of the class of 2024, Johnson will add valuable depth to their freestyle sprint group. Although he’s just shy of scoring range at the ACC Championships, Johnson has continuously made improvements each season with a year to go before arriving in Durham.
