NEW COMMIT: The University of Utah has received a new verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Seattle, Wash. native Kate Leary.

Leary, who owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 100 back, does her club swimming with Seattle Metropolitan Aquatic Club and most recently earned a best time at Mount Hood Futures this past summer after placing 10th in both backstroke events at Pacific Northwest LCM Seniors. Last winter, she raced two events at Juniors West before going on to register three top-10 finishes at Washington Seniors.

Also competing for Roosevelt High School, Leary is a five-time Washington 3A State Championship finalist. She earned bronze in both the 100 back and 100 fly as a junior after grabbing silver in both of those events during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Utah for the class of 2024!! I am so excited for the opportunity to go to a school with a wonderful team culture as well as an exceptional academic drive. I am thankful for my family who have helped me through this process and grateful for my friends, teachers and coaches who have supported me. I truly cannot wait! Go Utes!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 25.99
  • 100 back – 55.62
  • 200 back – 2:03.18
  • 100 fly – 56.24

She has consistently made improvements each season, dropping three seconds in the 100 back and five in the 200 back over the past two season. When she arrives in Salt Lake City as a member of the class of 2024, Leary will add her talents to a training group led by Audrey Reimer and Emma Lawless.
