USC-Bound Alexei Sancov Drops 4:16 500 Free to Highlight Night Three of Austin Speedo Sectionals

Night three of finals of the 2018 Speedo Sectionals stop in Austin, Texas at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center saw competition in the 100 breaststroke, 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and 400 freestyle relay.

At the end of the evening, Denver Hilltoppers sit in first place for team point totals with 399, followed by Terrapins Swim Team with 245.5 and Colorado Springs Swim Team with 229.

Highlights included USC commit and former World Junior record holder Alexei Sancov winning the 500-yard freestyle by 12 seconds and splitting a 43.14 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, and Northwestern commit Miriam Guevara winning the 100 fly in a 52.47.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

UCLA-bound Emily Lo of Terrapins Swim Team won the women’s 100 in a 1:01.43, a personal best time. Edenna Chen of Colorado Springs Swim Team nabbed second place with a 1:01.86, followed by Holley Dennis of Highlands Ranch in 1:02.31.

14-year-old Emma Weber dropped a 1:02.54 to secure fourth place, while Mary Buckley of Kingfish Swimming was close behind in 1:02.56 for fifth-place honors.

Terrapins Swim Team’s Sasha Liu slipped under 1:03.00 as well to finish in sixth place with a time of 1:02.86. Catherine Wright of Pikes Peak Athletics was seventh in 1:03.47, and Sophia Bricker of Cheyenne Mountain Aquatics’ time of 1:03.76 was good for eighth.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Elijah Warren of Aquawolves Swimming improved his quick prelims time even more in finals of the men’s 100-yard breaststroke, touching in 54.31 to finish first by almost a full second. Second place went to Jack Moranetz of Foothills Swim Team in 55.28, while two-time champion of the weekend Will Goodwin of DU Hilltoppers was third in a 55.95.

Christopher Hardt of Aquastar finished fourth in a 57.01, followed by Ryan Peterson of DU Hilltoppers in 57.46 for fifth. Peterson’s teammate Blayze Jessen finished sixth with a time of 57.52.

Joshua-Ryan Lujan of Colorado Springs Swim Team earned seventh-place honors with his time of 57.81, while Benjamin Dufauc of Aquawolves Swimming put up a 58.29 for eighth place.

Women’s 500 Freestyle

Kingfish Swimming’s distance ace Ashley Loomis, who won the 1000-yard freestyle, took the title in the women’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.36. The battle for second was much closer, between Jolee Liles of Crawfish Aquatics and Makayla Cazier of Utah Valley Aquatics. While Cazier was leading until the last 50, Liles came out on top with a 27.62 split to touch in 4:52.49 to Cazier’s 4:52.59.

Fourth place went to Alexa Connors of Kingfish Swimming in 4:55.37, followed by Lillianna Brook of DU Hilltoppers in 4:56.67.

Foothills Swim Team’s Kathryn Shanley touched in 4:58.08 for sixth place, while Morgan Simon of Jeffco Hurricanes was also under the 5-minute mark in 4:59.16 for seventh. Eighth place went to 14-year-old Melinda Johnson of Foothills Swim Team with her time of 5:01.45.

Men’s 500 Freestyle

Alexei Sancov of Terrapins Swim Team completed the mid-distance hat trick, winning the men’s 500-yard freestyle in addition to his titles in the 100 and 200 distances this weekend. His time of 4:16.08 was just off what he went at the Husky Invite in December of this past year, 4:14.25. He will be headed to USC in the fall.

Michael Lincoln of Brown University touched second 12 seconds later in 4:28.26, followed closely by Aggie Swim Club’s Jack McLaughlin in 4:29.83 for third place.

Montrose Marlins’ Ryan King stopped the clock in 4:29.94 for fourth-place honors, while Seth Hendrix of DU Hilltoppers was fifth in 4:32.19.

Quinton Pierce of Jeffco Hurricanes (4:33.59), Sean Dwyer of South Metro Storm (4:36.64), and Riley Pestorius (4:42.35) finished sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Northwestern commit Miriam Guevara of El Paso Aqua Posse, winner of the 200-yard butterfly, won the women’s 100-yard butterfly this evening in a blistering 52.47. That time is over a half-second faster than what she went a year ago in the event at Speedo Sectionals College Station.

Aquastart’s Olivia Theall touched in 54.24 to nab the silver medal, while bronze went to Meredith Rees of Pikes Peak Athletics in 54.48.

400 IM champion Natalie Arky of Highlands Ranch earned fourth place with her time of 54.63, followed by Lo in 54.80 for fifth.

13-year-old Ana Rojas from Colorado Springs Swim Team snuck into sixth with a drop from prelims to a 54.99, while Wright touched in 55.24 for seventh.

Kylie Andrews of Foothills Swim Team earned eighth-place honors in the championship final with a 55.42.

Men’s 100 Butterfly

Kyle Leach of Colorado Springs Swim Team won the men’s 100-yard butterfly with a 48.33, while Hendrix finished second in 48.85. The bronze went to Anthony Puertas of Utah Valley Aquatics in 49.05.

Warren showcased his depth to finish fourth with a 49.15, followed by Harrison Lierz of Front Range Baracudas in 49.23. Andrew Trepanier of South Metro Storm earned sixth place with his time of 49.27.

Gavin Olson of Foothills Swim Team also snuck in under 50 point with a 49.40 for seventh, while Goodwin notched yet another eighth-place finish in 50.15 for eighth in the championship heat.

Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay

Jenna Smith, Brooks, Anna Shaw, and Sydney Silver earned 40 points for DU Hilltoppers with their first-place finish in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay, putting up a time of 3:24.17. Highlands Ranch was close behind, as Delaney Smith, Elsa Litteken, Jessica Beckwith, and Kate Baker combined for a second-place time of 3:24.50. Third place went to Lainee Jones, Adela Teclova, Lindsey Immel, and Allana Clarke of Colorado Springs Swim Team in 3:26.09.

Pikes Peak Athletics, led by Rees, finished fourth in 3:26.77. Rees split a 50.40 on the anchor leg.

Fifth place went to Foothills Swim Team in 3:28.45, with Andrews posting a 50.24 for the fastest split of the night, followed by Utah Valley Aquatics in 3:28.98 for sixth.

Kingfish Swimming (3:29.14) and Terrapins Swim Team (3:29.32) also placed in the top eight of relay teams.

Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay

Sancov led the Terrapins to a victory in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay, splitting a blistering 43.14 on the second leg to push his team of Matthew Fetterman, Niklas Weigelt, and Andrew Rodriguez to a time of 3:01.90.

DU Hilltoppers’ Peterson, Goodwin, Jessen, and Hendrix finished second with a combined time of 3:03.34, followed by South Metro Storm’s Trepanier, Dwyer, Brady Torborg, and Alexander Kraft in 3:03.41.

Foothills Swim Team touched next in 3:07.04, followed by Colorado Springs Swim Team in 3:07.14 for fifth.

Crawfish Aquatics (3:08.22), Front Range Barracudas (3:09.63), and Utah Valley Aquatics (3:09.63) finished sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.
