USA Swimming today announced the names of 83 youth swimmers who will represent the 2019-2020 U.S. National Junior Team. The team increases in size by 16 swimmers from last year’s National Junior Team and is made up of 46 women and 37 men.

“Looking at this roster, there is a lot to be excited about,” USA Swimming National Junior Team Director Mitch Dalton said. “In addition to the 19 of our 18-and-under athletes who qualified for the National Team, the talent on this year’s National Junior Team shows that club coaches and athletes are gearing up for an exciting Olympic year. I look forward to seeing what this group can accomplish in Omaha and beyond.”

The 2019-2020 National Junior Team selection comes on the heels of Team USA’s performance at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships, which was one of the most successful international trips in team history. The team’s 37 medals are the second-most medals at a long course worlds competition, while the 18 gold medals are the most ever by a single team at a world junior championships competition. This year’s National Junior Team will feature 29 athletes who competed in Budapest, 19 of whom contributed to the impressive medal count.

Three athletes qualify for the National Junior Team in four events: Mariah Denigan (Walton, Ky./Northern Kentucky Clippers), Mikey Calvillo (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Area Swim Team) and Jake Magahey (Dacula, Ga./Swim Atlanta). Fourteen athletes in total make the roster in three or more events.

The 83 selections come from 26 states across the nation. California is the highest-represented state with eight selections, while Florida and Nevada follow with seven and six athletes, respectively.

Seventy-one clubs are represented on this year’s National Junior Team, led by Sandpipers of Nevada’s five representatives. Nation’s Capital Swim Club and Long Island Aquatic Club are the next-highest represented clubs with three swimmers each.

Selection procedures for the 2019-2020 U.S. National Junior Team are available at usaswimming.org. Open Water National Junior Team roster spots are based off the top-six men and top-six women from the 2019 USA Swimming 10K National Championships. Top finishers must also meet the general criteria for the qualification to the National Junior Team.
