TYR Pro Swim Series Fort Lauderdale Day 4 Men: Shaine Casas Breaks Series Record; Armstrong Wins from Lane 1

The 2023 TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Fort Lauderdale concluded with the Day 4 finals from Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center at the site of the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) on Saturday.

The events of the day are the 800 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 IM and 50 freestyle.

Here is a look at each event on Day 4:

800 Freestyle

Tunisia Olympic gold medalist Ahmed Hafnaoui swept the distance events at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Fort Lauderdale.

After winning the 1500 free, he won the 800 free on Saturday night in 7:48.50.

Egypt’s Marwan El Kamash finished second in 7:50.38.

Both were under the Olympic A standard.

Wales’ Daniel Jervis was third in 7:51.93, ahead of Michael Brinegar (7:54.52).

 

100 Backstroke

Hunter Armstrong gave the crowd some outside smoke, claiming the 100 backstroke title in Fort Lauderdale from Lane 1. Armstrong used a strong turn and back half to overtake Ryan Murphy and Justin Ress and get to the wall in 52.95.

Murphy finished second in 53.33, followed by Ress (53.63) and Nicolas Albiero (54.48).

Portugal’s Joao Nogueira Costa was fifth (54.79), followed by Canada’s Javier Acevedo (54.81), Jonny Marshall (55.05) and Chris Thames (55.48).

 

200 Breaststroke

Will Licon used a late push to get past Anton McKee and get to the wall first in the 200 breaststroke at the TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Fort Lauderdale.

Licon got to the wall in 2:10.77 just ahead of McKee (2:10.86).

Sun Devils’ Chase Kalisz took third in 2:12.26, ahead of MAAC’s Nic Fink (2:12.65) and Club Wolverine’s Tommy Cope (2:13.73).

 

100 Butterfly

Texas Longhorn Aquatics’ Shaine Casas broke the TYR Pro Swim Series record in the 100 butterfly, clocking a stunning 50.80 to hold off the field by three quarters of a second.

Sandpipers’ Ilya Kharun was second in 51.54, holding off Michael Andrew (51.80), Trenton Julian (52.15) and Zach Harting (52.19).

 

200 IM

Sun Devil’s Chase Kalisz went from fourth to first during the breaststroke leg to win the 200 IM in 1:58.32.

Kieran Smith was second in 2:00.13, followed by Canada’s Finlay Knox (2:01.02).

 

50 Freestyle

Alberto Mestre put the quickest race together to win the 50 free in 22.04.

Michael Andrew was second in 22.06, followed by Ryan Held (22.19), Miguel Duarte Nascimento (22.24) and Dylan Carter (22.27).
