Sam Oliver Sets State Record; Two State Relay Records for Briar Woods; Patrick Henry Roanoke Girls, Douglas S. Freeman Boys Win at Virginia Class 5 Meet

The 2019 Virginia Class 5 State Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at George Mason University’s Jim McKay Natatorium in Fairfax, Va.

Douglas S. Freeman used their impressive depth to secure the team title on the boys’ side with a final score of 292. John Champe’s Sam Oliver set a new state record in the 500 free, blasting a time of 4:23.92 during finals.

Briar Woods had two state record-setting relays and a pair of Class 5 marks by sophomore Mackenzie McConagha en route to finishing second overall with 197.5 points behind team champion Patrick Henry Roanoke (240). Broad Run’s Kayla Graham also set a new Class 5 record to help her team finish third with a final score of 114.

Boys Meet

The meet began as Douglas S. Freeman’s Mark Graff (24.71), Aidan Duffy (26.42), Colin Whiting (22.95) and Erik Kratzer (21.60) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:35.68. They also won the 4×50 free relay as the team of Nicholas Viers (21.62), Reid Hutcherson (22.15), Whiting (21.17) and Dain Ripol (21.09) touched in 1:26.03.

Douglas S. Freeman’s Hunter Locher got his hand to the wall first in the 200 IM with a final time of 1:52.62, just ahead of his teammate Duffy’s 1:52.89. Duffy later won the 100 breast, getting his hands to the wall first in 58.25.

Briar Woods’ Jack Moore cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:38.78 as the first of only two swimmers in the field to crack the 1:50 mark. Lee’s Ari Snow dove to first on the 1-meter board with a final score of 353.40 while Oliver raced to the top spot in the 500 free, finishing in 4:23.92 for the win and a new Virginia state record.

Rock Ridge’s Trace Wall splashed-and-dashed his way to a gold medal in the 50 free with a quick 20.88. Deep Run’s Nikolas Lee-Bishop won a close 100 free battle in 45.79, just ahead of runner-up Wall (45.82).

Noah Bowers of Patrick Henry Roanoke flew to the top of the podium in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 47.66 as the only athlete under the 50-second barrier. He then went on to win the 100 back in 48.12, just shy of his own Class 5 record of 48.04.

JR Tucker’s Patrick Madden (48.12), Daniel Chance (47.70), Dominic Mistretta (48.97) and Christopher Dalla Valle (45.76) concluded the boys’ meet with a win in the 4×100 free, combining for a time of 3:10.55.

Girls Meet

Briar Woods’ McConagha (25.40), Abby Harter (28.13), Katie Winklosky (25.94) and Jordan Wenner (23.34) got the meet off to a fast start in the 4×50 medley relay. Their time of 1:42.81 broke the Virginia overall state record of 1:43.02, as well as the Class 5 mark of 1:43.62.

Patrick Henry Roanoke’s Caroline Kulp won the 200 free in 1:49.00, just shy of her own Class 5 record of 1:48.57 she set last year. She also won the 500 free in 4:55.75 as the first of two swimmers under five minutes, again off her own class mark of 4:49.14.

Graham won the 200 IM in 2:00.13, just slightly ahead of Harter’s 2:00.16. Graham’s time broke Harter’s Class 5 record of 2:00.26 set in 2017. Princess Anne’s Olivia Francella dove to first on the 1-meter board with a final score of 411.55.

Kecoughtan’s Brieanna Romeny splashed-and-dashed her way to the gold medal in the 50 free, winning the event in a swift 23.38. Romney showed off her sprint talent by also winning the 100 free in 50.96.

McConagha flew to first in the 100 fly, getting her hands to the wall in 53.50 just ahead of Graham (53.75) to eclipse Whittney Hamilton’s Class 5 mark of 53.51 set two seasons ago. She also won the 100 back (53.73) en route to break her own Class 5 record of 54.41.

Briar Woods set another relay record, this time in the 4×50 free as the team of Wenner (23.97), McConagha (23.55), Mackenzie Cunnane (24.05) and Harter (22.76) finished in 1:34.33 to break the state and Class 5 record of 1:35.45.

Harter won the 100 breast, getting her hands to the wall in 1:02.49 to break the Class 5 record of 1:02.85 she set last year. Patrick Henry Roanoke’s Kulp (51.62), Shelby Stanley (51.85), Brooke Knisely (52.95) and Hamilton (51.94) concluded the meet as championsin the 4×100 free relay in 3:28.36.

Check meet mobile again. You have the boys 500 prelims times in.

This is not accurate. Rock Ridge boys team finished second.
