Tokyo 2020 Committee Releases Sport Pictograms for Upcoming Olympic Games

The Tokyo Organizing Committee for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games recently unveiled the official sport pictograms for the upcoming Tokyo Games on their organizing website. There are 50 different pictograms representing the 33 different sports of the Olympic Games. 

The pictograms were a visual style first started at the 1964 Olympic Games, which were also held in Tokyo and were the first Olympic Games to be held in Asia. The visual style emerged as a way to communicate to an international groups of athletes and fans, and have been incorporated into each subsequent edition of the Games.

According to the Organizing Committee, the 2020 pictograms are designed to not only communicate the sports they depict, but are designed to showcase the “vibrant movement” of each sport. The designer for the pictograms was Masaaki Hiromura, a graphic designer who resides in Tokyo.
