Texas Bolsters Sprint Contingent With Transfer of Speedster Cameron Auchinachie

The University of Texas has bolstered its sprinting group with the addition of Cameron Auchinachie to the roster. Auchinachie, who formerly competed at the University of Denver, will be a graduate student and take advantage of the NCAA ruling that granted students an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Auchinachie did not represent the Pioneers last season but had some impressive performances during his last appearance at the NCAA Championships. During his sophomore year, he posted top times of 19.13 for the 50-yard freestyle, 41.81 in the 100 freestyle and 1:34.24 for the 200 freestyle. He was a consolation finalist in the shorter events, placing 16th and 11th, respectively.

Auchinachie’s graduate transfer gives Texas coach Eddie Reese an impressive arsenal of sprinters. The Longhorns also boast the likes of returnees Daniel Krueger, Drew Kibler and Alvin Jiang, and incoming freshman Anthony Grimm. At the 2021 NCAA Championships, where Texas captured its 15th team title, the Longhorns finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay. Auchinachie could be an option for those relays at the 2022 NCAA Champs.

Texas is scheduled to begin its season on Sept. 24 with its annual Orange-White meet. Its first dual meet against outside competition will be Oct. 8 when Incarnate World visits the Lee & Joe Jamail Swimming Center.
