Tatjana Schoenmaker Adds Second Event For Tokyo With 1:05 100 Breaststroke at South African Nationals

Tatjana Schoenmaker and Christian Sadie continued to impress during the fifth day of the SA National Aquatic Championships, taking place at the Newton Park Swimming Pool in Gqeberha.

Schoenmaker added the 100m breaststroke title to her tally with a new African Record and Olympic Qualification time of 1:05.74, shedding 0.15secs from her own 2019 time of 1:05.89, while 17 year old Lara van Niekerk won the silver in 1:07.40 and Kaylene Corbett the bronze in 1:08.88.

Chad le Clos bagged his third gold medal in the 100m butterfly, clocking a fast 52.13 ahead of Matthew Sates in 52.15 and Ethan du Preez in 53.28, while in the ladies’ butterfly, it was Erin Gallagher that claimed the top spot in 59.64 to Dune Coetzee’s 59.97 and Tayla Lovemore in 1:00.36.

In the 100m breaststroke, Alaric Basson’s time of 1:01.29 won him the gold medal ahead of Brenden Crawford in 1:02.47 and Jared Pike in 1:02.91.

Christian Sadie (SM7) celebrated his fourth Paralympic Qualifier in the 200m individual medley, winning the race in a new African Record time of 2:35.70, while 16 year old Matthew Moss (SM9) posted a new U15-U18 SA Record in the same event, clocking 2:48.00 in the heats and bettered that time in the finals, winning the bronze in 2:45.83.

Kat Swanepoel (SM2) secured a new SA Record in the 150m individual medley heats in 3:40.12 and improved on that time in the finals, touching the wall in 3:30.79.

  • Ethan du Preez – 200m butterfly – 1:56.44
  • Tatjana Schoenmaker – 200m breaststroke – 2:20.17; 100m breaststroke – 1:05.74

  • Christian Sadie (S7) – 100m backstroke – 1:15.01; 50m freestyle – 29.03; 50m butterfly – 30.91; 200m individual medley – 2:35.70

  • Alani Ferreira (SB13) – 100m breaststroke – 1:23.97
  • Cornelle Leach (SB12) – 100m breaststroke – 1:29.52
