Dryside Training: Exercise Equipment Series – Medicine Ball and Cable Exercises

In our last article (SW April), we focused on TRX suspension straps to enhance stroke stabilization and body positions in the water. This month, we’ll focus on the benefits from using a medicine ball and cables or pulleys.

The first thing that a medicine ball offers is resistance. Secondly, you can throw it and catch it. Begin with a 6-pound ball and progress to 8 and 10 pounds with time. Cables allow for different stroke movements.

Together, these two types of equipment enable the swimmer to strengthen his or her stroke and core.

I recommend doing this program twice a week, performing each exercise for three sets of 15 repetitions. As always, discontinue these exercises one week before a major competition.
