008 DICK JOCHUMS, HALL OF FAME AMERICAN SWIMMING COACH, DIES AT 81

Dick Jochums, the revered swimming coach who mentored some of America’s greatest stars from the 1960s into the 2000s, died on Aug. 19 at the age of 81. Jochums was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame with the Class of 2017.

009 JASON MOMOA TO PRODUCE FEATURE BIOPIC ON DUKE KAHANAMOKU

Hollywood star Jason Momoa has already delved deeply into the story of fellow Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku for a documentary. Now, he’s ready to take it to the big screen. The star of “Aquaman” and producer Peter Safran are teaming up on a feature film about the life of the International Swimming Hall of Fame honoree and surfing pioneer.

Regan Smith, a three-time Olympic medalist and four-time World Championship gold medalist, decided to turn professional, putting her pursuit of a college degree on hold to concentrate on swimming. The 20-year-old leaves Stanford after her freshman year to train with Bob Bowman in Tempe, Ariz.

014 CHASE KALISZ MOVING TO ARIZONA TO REUNITE WITH BOB BOWMAN

After 10 years training in Georgia with Coach Jack Bauerle, 2016 Olympic silver medalist Chase Kalisz will be returning to train with his former age group coach, North Baltimore Aquatic Club’s Bob Bowman, who is now the head coach at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.

016 SIERRA SCHMIDT JOINS WAVE OF PRO SWIMMERS HEADING TO BOB BOWMAN AT ARIZONA STATE

Former Michigan All-American and Team USA distance freestyler Sierra Schmidt became the third Team USA swimmer on Aug. 9 to announce their move to join Coach Bob Bowman and his ASU Pro Group in Tempe, Ariz. Earlier in the day, Regan Smith and Chase Kalisz announced they would be making the same move.

018 DAVID POPOVICI SETS 100 FREESTYLE WORLD RECORD WITH SCORCHING 46.86

Romania’s David Popovici eclipsed the men’s 100 meter freestyle world record by 5-hundredths of a second with a 46.86 at the European Championships in Rome. The previous standard was set by Cesar Cielo at the very same Foro Italico pool at the 2009 Worlds during the height of the shiny-suit era.

020 USA SINKS THE AUSSIE DOLPHINS, 309-283, IN AN EPIC DUEL IN THE POOL

Led by Michael Andrew, the Americans beat the Australians by 26 points at the Duel in the Pool in Sydney. The meet marked a return to the innovative and exciting swimming meets that thrilled fans in the 1990s and 2000s.

024 DOLPHINS SURGE PAST TEAM USA IN A CLOSE OPEN WATER CALL AT BONDI BEACH

In the first-ever Duel in the Pool between Australia and the United States to include an open water event, the fast-finishing Australian Dolphins took advantage of home waters to come from behind and defeat the Americans in the innovative 4 x 800 meter open water relay off Sydney’s internationally acclaimed surfing mecca at Bondi Beach.
